Xbox Taiwan interviews Sheylara

Yesterday, I had my first interview done on Xbox LIVE, through Xbox LIVE video chat.

It was conducted by Toshi, a prominent Taiwanese blogger who is also the voice of Xbox Taiwan and maintains the local official site, Xbox Life.

The interview was recorded and a video of it will be published on the site once they’re done editing and subtitling it.

It was really fun! I haven’t actually tried the video chat function on Xbox LIVE before, so it was interesting. Well, it’s just like any other video conference. You stick a webcam in front of you and you see two faces on the screen – yours and your chat partner’s.

I forgot to take a screenshot, sorry!

Anyway, Toshi posted a teaser for the interview a few days ago.

The translation (kindly supplied by Xbox Singapore’s PR agency):

A Mysterious Babe will be making a special appearance on Xbox LIFE!

Why is she standing with Master Chief? Who is she?? Don’t tell me Master Chief’s real identity is???

Since there are so many unanswered questions, we are going to have a private chat with her to find out more. Let’s call her Secret Agent S for now. We’ll have our first interaction with her this coming Thursday on Feb 26. All the details will be disclosed on Xbox LIFE (blog). Watch this space if you’re keen to know her better!

Hehe! Cute! Link here. Will update you guys when the video is up!

Ninja Blade short review

I meant to do this two weeks ago! But I’ve been so caught up I haven’t had time to edit this video until today:

It’s a montage of the first hour of gameplay. I’ve only managed to clear the first mission of the game and it’s already as exciting as hookey.

There are, no doubt, some Ninja Gaiden II elements in it, such as the awesome ninja leaps and bounds and cool weaponry, and critics might brush Ninja Blade off as a copy. But it’s a ninja game, for crying out loud. How else would you make a ninja game if not with the obligatory ninja wayang?

But the gameplay experience is quite unique.

First of all, the game is very, very cinematic. The whole damn thing feels like a big-budget Hollywood film. Watch the video and you’ll understand. Awe-inspiring cinematic angles, stylistic panning, fluid transitions between cut-scenes and gameplay, slow-mo effects during critical strike moments, sometimes humorous dialogue.

When I was viewing my video clips for editing, I wanted to ditch the videos and go power up my Xbox 360 right away. This is one of those games you’ll enjoy watching someone else play, even.

There was this part when I was learning how to run on walls and, as usual, failing very miserably in my first attempts. The failure made me fall onto a lower level of the map, which led me to discovering a secret breakable wall.

Breaking through, I found special items, including a new ninja costume! It pays to explore every nook and cranny.

Original costume:

Looted costume:

LOL pinstripe ninja! That’s quite a silly costume, to be sure. But there’ll be more styles. I just haven’t found them yet.

You can also customise the colours of every part of your costume, right down to the last detail.

You could make a total clown out of your ninja if you wanted to. Once you’ve saved your costume, you’ll see your exact creation in the next missions, including in the cut-scenes. Pretty cool, huh?

There’s one interesting feature in the game which starts out as fun but becomes annoying after a while.

At crucial points of the plot, sometimes you’re tasked to press a specific button on your controller to progress the story. You have like less than two seconds to react. You get to retry it if you fail (there’s a cool rewind sequence) but you take damage if you fail these things during boss fights.

You’d have to memorise your button positions because there is not enough time to look at your controller to find the button.

But despite it being mildly annoying at times, I really enjoy the cinematics of this part of the gameplay. Again, watch the video!

Finally, one super annoying thing about Ninja Blade: You can’t save between missions!!

Your game only saves when you complete a mission. The first mission took me an hour to complete. Go figure.

You could complete it in less than an hour, I suppose, but probably not a lot less. I think games should let us save at least every 15 minutes, if not 10.

So, if you want to play this game, wait till you have plenty of time.

Newbie tip from Cavin of Xbox Xperience Zone (Funan): Your ninja has three weapons which you can upgrade using blood crystals. Don’t upgrade the Oni-Slayer Blade because you get a free upgrade on that weapon a little later in the game.

Cavin, by the way, has completed the entire game several times (because he demos games at XXZ and just spends all his days playing games – what a cool job!).

He told me the tip after I’d already upgraded my slayer. Doh. So I’m probably gonna replay the game from scratch when I pick it up again. Which is no biggie. I rather enjoyed it.

The biggest Halo fan in Singapore…

…will be revealed tomorrow!!

The Xbox Team recently hosted a competition to seek the biggest Halo fan in Singapore. Participants were tasked to submit as much photo and video evidence as possible of their Halo fanaticism. We now have five finalists competing for the title.

And these five will be put to the test tomorrow at Xbox Xperience Zone (Challenger, Funan) from 5 pm to 7 pm.

This competition is held in conjunction with the launch of Halo Wars, which is currently hogging the limelight within the Xbox community. (I have the game… I just haven’t had time to play it. =P)

Expect mini contests, giveaways and photo-taking opportunities with Master Chief at the event tomorrow! (If you’re among the first 50 to take a photo with him, you get a print-out to take home with you, free!

Here’s the Master Chief photo again…

Anyway, I hope to see you at Funan tomorrow. I’ll be there!

Why I’m playing Guild Wars now

I can’t quite believe that I’m actually spending hours of my precious days on this game. It’s quite an old game, around since 2005, but is still going strong in terms of player base.

One day, out of the blue, my friends all decided to troop down to Sim Lim Square together to buy Guild Wars. And suddenly, the whole group is playing.

These are the same friends (Club Morte) whom I met in EverQuest II in 2005. It was through an MMORPG that we bonded, although we’ve stopped playing MMOs for a few years now, so it’s quite nostalgic to explore another MMO together after so many years.

The good thing about Guild Wars is that you only pay a one-time fee to buy the game. There is no monthly subscription fee for logging into the game.

Okay, another good thing: The graphics and and avatars are beautiful!! This is my character wearing Xbox colours, hah! =)

I’m an Elementalist. I chose this class because the armor is very cute! Even the combat stances are cute! *lol*

I actually played Guild Wars beta in 2004, but never felt compelled to play the game at retail. I don’t remember why. Most probably, I was busy with another MMO at that time.

So, I’m quite enjoying this game right now, especially because my friends are playing.

Morte’s character’s name is Emperor Morte. He’s been receiving a lot of flak from us for that, over the past week.

Every hour, the game will remind you how long you’ve been playing.

My next armor upgrade:

Some people have mini pets which do nothing in the game except follow them around and strike cute poses. Some of these pets are humanoids and it’s really funny seeing them walk around the city.

Hehe!! My gaming bro Swordplay, who is a long-time GW player, loaned me a candy stick and gingerbread man weapon set. It was a limited edition Christmas release.

The stats are low, but just nice for my level right now.

Casting a spell:

Back view of see-through armor. *lol*

Pity that party sizes are limited to four per group. A major bummer!

Well, we’ll see how it goes. I’m enjoying it so far and, perhaps, the game will even last a few months for us, at least.

Win a Street Fighter IV calendar!!

The Street Fighter IV calendar redemption program at Xbox Xperience Zone is winding to a close today.

If you didn’t get your calendar, you could try winning one of the two sets I have on hand right now!

I actually have three, but the Goonfather confiscated one to place in his office. But that’s okay. He’s the biggest Street Fighter fan there ever was. He told me he practically lived in the arcade during his youth.

So, how about I give my other two sets to two worthy Street Fighter fans? Tell me:

  1. Who’s your favourite Street Fighter character and why.
  2. Who’s your least favourite Street Fighter character and why.

I’m looking for entertaining answers (can be short and sweet), but you’re welcome to give me straight answers as well. If there aren’t any entries that jump out and grab me, I’ll randomise the winners.

Closing date: Thursday, March 5, 2009, 11:59 pm.

It’s fun to be a movie guru

I’m waiting impatiently for the Xbox team to send me my copy of Scene It? Box Office Smash! I totally can’t wait to play it!

Scene It? Box Office Smash

I saw the game in action at a recent Xbox press event, where a few journalists were invited to pit their movie knowledge against one another.

It looks fun! I am embarrassingly bad at trivia games because my memory is horrible (a few times I watched a movie more than halfway through before I remembered that I had already watched it), plus I don’t watch movies often so I am effectively ignorant, but I want to play!

I love the use of the Xbox avatars, which you will see perform lots of cute actions.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

And the fact that the game features mostly new movies, rather than movies made before you were born.

There are also 22 puzzle types which means it won’t get boring so quickly.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Oh, and big button buzzers that come with the game!

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Here’s a video of the competition!

The game arrived while I was working on GGF! Wootage! Just in time for me to take a photo of the actual box. Sitting atop the epic mess on my desk.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Aww I feel like crying.

It’s such an emotional journey gamers undertake with their games.

It’s fun to be a gaming journalist

On Tuesday, the Xbox team hosted a Chinese New Year get-together at Brewerkz, Riverside Point, for gaming journalists.

Xbox 360 press event

There were Lips and Scene It? Box Office Smash friendly tournaments to start off the event. It was pretty trippy. I think everyone had fun, not just because of the free-flow beer, but because all the gaming journos more or less know each other since they always meet at events.

Xbox 360 press event

I didn’t drink any beer because alcohol makes me either sleepy or tipsy, neither of which are recommended states of consciousness in the company of journalists.

Xbox 360 press event

We were also shown previews of Ninja Blade and Halo Wars, the two next hot titles coming out on the Xbox 360, which I will talk about nearer to the dates. But they’re very anticipated titles!

We were also shown the latest gaming mouse: the Microsoft SideWinder X8, which boasts BlueTrack technology and has a play-while-you-charge feature and, well, tons of other things. I don’t want to sound like the back of a blister pack so let’s leave it at that.

Microsoft Sidewinder X8

And we were informed that the fashionable Arc mouse, previously in black and red, now also comes in white!

Microsoft Arc Mouse

(I know it doesn’t look very white in the picture. Bad lighting lah.)

I wonder if pink will be next!

Everyone went home with a Lips t-shirt and an Arc mouse!! How cool is that?

The t-shirt says, “I want you to play with my Lips.” Or something like that. I can’t find my t-shirt now to confirm. It’s either sitting in Makkuro or buried somewhere in one of the junk heaps in my room.

Maybe I’ll give that out as prize next week… if I can find it. =P

It’s fun to be a gamer

Many gamers have told me that they don’t like Norton because it slows down their computers, among other things. So, I wonder what they will say to this:

Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition!

Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition

It’s designed to gamer specifications after taking into account endless feedback over the years.

This software, in the words of Symantec, “won’t bother you while you’re in the middle of a game”.

It uses less than 6MB memory, installs in under a minute, adds less than one second to boot time, averages scans in less than 35 seconds and waits till your computer is idle before performing resource intensive actions.

Good dog!

Symantec hosted a Counter-Stike gaming tournament on Wednesday to allow gamers to experience firsthand the NAV GE.

To be more accurate, you don’t experience it because you’re not supposed to feel or see it (unless you specifically want to). We had a few great sessions of lag-free gaming at Cathay E2MAX.

I took Unker Kell and RN1209 with me to the event and we were put in a team to challenge three other guests.

Actually, I wasn’t too bad. I even managed to get in quite a number of kills. But our team still lost. Blah. It’s all my fault!! *cries*

I’ve never played Counter-Strike before but I think it’s fun. Don’t mind playing again.

Our tournament was actually just a farce. The real tournament happened with the real experts. Team Titans (four-time WCG Singapore champions) vs some other team whose name I’ve forgotten. I’m sorry!!

The Titans (in red) won. Congrats to them!

It’s fun to scrub animals all day

Don’t ask me! I don’t know anything! I deny everything! I plead insanity!

I am now playing…

The Sims 2 Pets

…on the DS, in lieu of bedtime reading.

Yes, it’s my bedtime poking activity. The Goonfather says I’m very noisy.

I haven’t gotten any new DS games in ages so I’m playing old games. =P It’s one of those damn annoying games but you can’t help getting addicted to it. Argh.

The Sims 2 Pets

Basically, you’re a vet. While taking care of your own needs (like all Sims games), you’re healing pets every day.

Pet owners will come to you and say, “My pet is ill,” and you say, “I will fix him up!” and if you do, you earn money. If you don’t, you get stoned.

Sometimes, pet owners will come to you and say, “My pet is ugly.”

The cure for the ugly disease is to buy clothes and accessories and dress the pet up. LOL.

The Sims 2 Pets

Other diseases include flu, worms, dirty and broken limbs.

What a stupid game.

Win a mystery prize

I can’t decide what to give out this week and I’m bored of taking boring product photos every week. So this week’s prize will be a mystery. Haha.

The contest will be super easy.

Be the first person to correctly tell me what game the screenshot at the top of today’s GGF is of!

(To make it not too easy, you have to give the exact full name, as it is written on the game box, or wherever, to qualify.)

Er… no closing date. The contest will remain until someone gets the prize.

In case you’re wondering about today’s title, it’s just random and has no significance to anything.

I’m just sleepy today (not enough sleep last night). When I’m sleepy and tired, I tend to be less conscientious about making sense.

Who cares about titles, anyway?

Happy Chinese New Year!

An interview in a French web magazine

I wish I had studied French because I’m now in an interview article I can’t read. Haha.

French is actually the next language I want to learn, after Japanese, but I’m kind of stuck at intermediate Japanese due to lack of time.

Anyway, this is an interview by w3sh, a lifestyle French online magazine dedicated to everything related to gadgets, gizmos, art, urban culture and cutting-edge consumer electronics.

I wonder which category I fall under. I think cutting-edge consumer electronics.

According to The Surrealist, I’m a waffle iron.

Definitely cutting edge.

Well, click to read my interview. If you can understand French. lol.

Okay, the interview was conducted in English and later translated to French.

The site uses a cute grumpy bear mascot which is also an actual toy. After e-mailing me one day out of the blue to ask me if they could interview me, they snail mailed me Mr Grumpy Bear (which is my name for it, not theirs). How sweet!

I took some pictures with it and e-mailed it back to them.

Isn’t it cute? I wore a red cap to match it.

Maybe I should have saved the cap for Chinese New Year. I didn’t buy any red clothes this year!

I happened to pass by Esprit the other day while running errands, and I walked in because I thought I had better buy some CNY clothes. (If you read my Star Blog this week, I mentioned that I hate going clothes shopping, unless it’s during an overseas holiday when I have nothing better to do.)

I ended up buying rubbish stuff unsuitable for CNY, such as a very thick, black autumn (or winter, I dunno) jacket. Which I don’t really need but which I just had to get on the off-chance that Singapore starts snowing.

That’s one reason I hate shopping. I never make the right purchases.

Well, it’s very comfortable. And warm. Is all I can say in my own defence.

[Gamer Girl Friday]

While surfing around randomly, I stumbled upon this old article listing 15 senseless video game quotes.

Game quote

They’re funny, even if many are nothing more than dodgy Japanese English which we’ve all come to love.

Game quote

Anyway, “your fists of evil are about to meet my steel wall of niceness” so make sure you read everything in GGF and don’t just skip to the contest!

Upcoming games in the next two weeks

I was going do a quarterly list. Then I realised I had a list as long as an airport runway, even after striking out the weird titles, so I decided to do a monthly, instead. In any case, looking forward to games too far in advance is bad for your health, so this is for your own good.

In order of release dates (North American):

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest
PC, PS3, Xbox 360, DS
By Pandemic Studios and Electronic Arts
Release Date: January 13

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Checking out the official site for the game makes me feel like… watching the movies. lol. When you first load the site, it screams at you:

Middle Earth stands on the brink of destruction
You will unite to save it or destroy it
Each race is bound to this one fate
Choose your allegiance

Then you choose Good or Evil and the rousing LOTR theme song booms at you. (If you choose evil, you get some eerie music, instead.)

Funny, I don’t feel like playing the game as much as I feel like watching the trilogy again.

But it does look promising, especially the multiplayer co-op (4 players) and versus (16 players) modes. You can even play 4-way split screen on the Xbox 360’s version. A tad squeezy, I expect, but should be fun.

I’m a speed demon

Still playing Grand Theft Auto IV. I found a quiet rich neighbourhood which has a good selection of Ferraris and Porsches. The owners just leave them in open driveways, unlocked, so I just jump into them and drive away.

The best thing is… the cars respawn!! After I crash and burn one, I just go back there and grab another. Hur hur. It’s like free-flow fast cars. The downside is that the neighbourhood is in an extreme corner of the map so it’s pretty far to get to.

I recently received a street racing mission, where you have to come first out of six racers. I failed twice because, in my excitement, I kept driving into pillars and mailboxes. So I threw the controller to the Goonfather and said, “Eh, play for me.”

He took the lead within 10 seconds of the race and just leisurely cruised all the way to the finish line. FREAKING SICK!!

Anyway, he helped me win this baby.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV

Not that you really need to win a car since you can steal any car you fancy as long as you can find it but, still, owning one legitimately feels nice.

The next day, I gave that street racing thing another go and realised that it’s actually chicken feed. I’d just let my excitement get the better of me the first time.

This is what happens when you drive too fast and you get too excited.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Thank goodness for Pay N Spray. Brand new car in a brand new colour in seconds!

Battle of the Lips

I posted this in my recent Star Blog but I know some of you don’t like to go there so here’s the video for your benefit! It’s a video montage of our wild gaming session of Lips during Christmas. (Different from the ones I posted last week.)

By the way, Lips will be launching together with Scene It? in Singapore next weekend! Head over to Xbox Xperience Zones on Jan 10 and 11, 2009 (11 am to 5 pm) to enjoy the launch activities or take part in the Top Idol or Movie Guru competitions!

Just walk in on those days to sign up!

XXZs are located at Challenger, Funan and Best Denki, VivoCity.

Destroying good songs with SingStar

After our Lips party, my friends got into a singing craze and one of them bought SingStar Vol. 2.

Unfortunately, they didn’t know many of the songs in there. And the rules of the game took a bit getting used to.

Watch how they butchered the songs and argued with each other. (I had to download a censor beep for this video. Haha!)

Cosplaying Rock Band

Remember the Nuffnang Christmas party I just attended? We went back to play Rock Band 2 after the party, still in our costumes!

The music in this video is Uno by Muse but that’s not a Rock Band song. I just happen to love that song so wanted to use it for something. Heh.

Who can sing worse than him?

It’s of my friend Morte singing really badly and making everyone go crazy with laughter.

Listen to the conversations cos they’re funny and watch till the end for the punchline!

Sheylara the Alien Queen

Here’s another movie trailer made from You’re in the Movies on the Xbox 360, featuring me as an evil alien invader.

Cutest gamer girl ever

This isn’t one of my videos, but reader terboo shared this with me recently and I simply must share it with everyone else.

This is the most awesomest little girl in the whole wide world! She amazes me! She’s so cute I want to kidnap her home!

Little bit of background, from the video description in YouTube. Her name is Melodie and she’s one year old. It only took a few days for her parents to go through the cards with her and she remembers them all!

Musical genius plays Wind Waker

My bro (not real) Swordplay sent me this vid.

It’s not exactly a game thing but the guy is playing a soundtrack from a popular game (Legend of Zelda) so it’s kinda relevant.

He is really amazing. I wish I had that kind of talent And he looks pretty cute, too! ;)

Result of last week’s contest

Technically, the contest was two weeks ago cos I didn’t have a contest last week. So, anyway, I’ve got a winner!!

Three people got all correct answers so I had to put them into the random roll.

The toughest question was, of course, how many games there are in this pile:

The answer is 17!!

And the winner is neghxanys!!! Hooray! Please e-mail me to claim your prize!

(Sorry, I know I still owe prizes to people from the last few contests. I will mail them out soon, I promise!)

neghxanys wins a 3-month Xbox LIVE Gold subscription card! WOW!

Incidentally, I also love his answer to this question:

Q: How will you use the Xbox 360 to save the world?

A: Drop it on a cheerleader’s stalker’s head. Save the cheerleader, Save the world. :D

Made me laugh! Way to go, pal!

And now… for my 2009 resolution.

This is the very first resolution I’m making since I was, like, 14 or something. (I don’t believe in resolutions as a rule.)

I hope you will all share this resolution with me.

Happy 2009! =)

Gamer Girl Friday signing out.
