Hobbies to drive your spouse crazy

There must be nothing more annoying than a friend or family member learning a new language (except maybe a friend or family member learning piano or violin or the trombone). These linguist-wannabes would go around all day saying asinine things like “I am eating an apple” (in whatever language) even if it’s blindingly obvious that they are not, in fact, eating anything at all.

They would tell you in earnest: “The cat is black and the orange is orange,” and you would wonder about ringing up their therapist.

And maybe you should because goodness knows everyone needs a therapist these days.

Comic - Learning a new language

I should know because, right now, I am spouting truisms such as “el vino y la manzana son rojos” on a daily basis. (For the Spanish-challenged, this means “the wine and the apple are red”.) I am diligent in practising my sentences because I’m sure they will come in handy when I next visit Spain.

“El vino y la manzana son rojos,” I will say to the nice lady ringing up my shopping at the supermarket while I point at the apple and the delectable bottle of Spanish wine in my basket.

And she will clap her hands in glee and give me a discount because I just said something very useful to her.

Comic - Learning a new language 2

All I need to do is make sure that I preserve my sanity long enough to even make the trip to Spain. One does tend to feel a bit crazy after one has kindly informed one’s family for the umpteenth time the colours of various objects in the household and the ways in which one can interact with said objects, only to be met with a blank stare.

For example, I would tell Piers, in Spanish, “The newspaper is black and white. I read the newspaper,” and he would give me either a blank stare or, more often, a “Shall I ring your therapist?” stare, slightly quizzical, slightly worried, but mostly what the fuck.

Perhaps it’s his sanity I should be worried about.

Comic - Learning a new language 3

Now, remember in the beginning I mentioned that someone learning a musical instrument would probably be more annoying than someone telling you dumb things in Spanish all day long?

Well, guess what, I’m buying a piano, too!

Or, rather, Piers has just agreed to buy me a piano!

Ooh. I just realised that he probably isn’t yet aware of the double whammy situation he’s gotten himself into.

Double insanity!

Well, I am not exactly a totally virgin beginner pianist. I took piano lessons when I was 11 for a year or two and passed a few exams. However it HAS been a while, so I’m anticipating long months of banging out Yankee Doodle or whatever stupid songs they make you learn in piano these days.

I should probably put a therapist on our speed dial.

On the health front, I’ve decided to give yoga another try. (Went to a class a long time ago and hated it because it was so boring.) But I need to like it because of, well, health reasons, lol, so I’m going to try it at home first (using yoga apps on the iPad) and see how that works out before going to actual classes.

Perhaps Piers will be so distracted (and distraught) by the crazy poses that he won’t notice the other hobbies!

Comic - Yoga

There’s a plan, huh?

Probably not a very good one but we all gotta do what we all gotta do and spouses gotta put up with it. :D

Will keep you posted on outcomes!

You are invited to make some noise

I was tempted to take part in Noise Singapore when I learnt of it a few years ago!

Noise Singapore is a youth arts festival initiated by the National Arts Council to create noise around the creative talents of youths.

Noise Singapore 2010

Basically, anyone under the age of 35, regardless of skill level, background or occupation, can submit their art, design, photography and music and have it chosen for display or performance at Noise Singapore events and platforms around Singapore.

Well, I don’t want to bombard you with a long list of excuses why I never took part. So, let’s just leave it at that and talk about the people who did take part, because they are the ones we should celebrate!

I attended the Noise Singapore media preview last week to check out all the selected entries and to meet their creators. A nice, artistic space has been created on the third level of Raffles City Shopping Centre to house all this creativity.

Noise Singapore 2010

Pretending to be a part of it…

Noise Singapore 2010

Drawing and colouring materials are provided in the space for anyone to sit down and create an artistic masterpiece!

While they were busy being budding artists, I was busy going around taking photos!!!

The media crowd:

The space has been divided into different segments for music, art and design, and photography, to simulate the actual working spaces of artists.

For example, a photography studio!

This year, merchandise is being sold for the first time at Noise Singapore due to popular demand. You can find t-shirts, tote bags and shoes bearing the designs of this year’s participants.

Amos Lu and Sarah Yap, winners of the Noise Singapore Celebration Theme:

Noise Singapore 2010

I was very impressed by this duo when I heard them perform their winning song. Sarah, particularly, has a beautiful, melodious voice that belies the cute, impish styling on her small frame. You just can’t get enough of listening to her!

Calling themselves In Finite Flight, both are NUS undergraduates, Sarah in third-year Communications and New Media, and Amos in first-year Chemical Engineering.

It’s quite a story how they paired and up eventually won this prestigious award at Noise Singapore.

Amos and Sarah first met as band members in Anderson Junior College. They were asked to write a song for the school’s annual orientation programme. Then a trio, they wrote the song “We Will Make It” together with ex-member Harry.

The response to the song was great, so when Noise Singapore offered an opportunity last year, Sarah and Amos decided to re-record the song and submit it for the competition. A few months later, they received a call to tell them they had won!

Noise Singapore 2010

You can hear the winning song here. Just scroll down or do a search for In Finite Flight.

Sarah recalls the time when they had to climb up neverending stairs to Amos’ flat in Bishan to practise their music (because Amos’ flat didn’t have lifts). Thus came the name for their group, “In Finite Flight”, a play on the words “in finite” and “infinite”.

Sarah plays guitar and sings lead vocals while Amos plays bass and provides backup vocals. It looks like the two of them are comfortable with the size of their band, with no plans to expand.

I think they sound good enough as they are. You can hear more of their songs on their MySpace page here.

It’s so nice to hear success stories, always! =)

Of course, In Finite Flight isn’t the only talented team to emerge from Noise Singapore. Why not check out more of such promising musicians at the Noise Singapore concerts? They’re happening at the Esplanade between March 5 and 7. Check this page for the schedule!

If you’re more interested in visual art, then Raffles Place Shopping Centre is the place for you! The art exhibition on Level 3 (which I have been blogging about) will be open to the public till March 10.

Noise Singapore 2010

Noise Singapore 2010

Ahh… who is this mysterious hunk walking out from the exhibition?!!

I have no idea, sorry. Was just randomly taking photos all day!

Some random pieces of art I was attracted to:

holly by alvelyn alko

Noise Singapore 2010
RED by Chou-Tac

Noise Singapore 2010

There are a lot more I like which I shan’t include here or there will be too much scrolling!! You should just head down to Raffles City Shopping Centre to see for yourself. =P

Or, better yet, why not take part in next year’s Noise Singapore?!

There’s an artist in most of us. Never mind if you’re stuck in a non-creative job because you need to pay the bills and haven’t visited your art in ages.

Don’t give up your talent! Get into the swing of things! To get inspired, you can attend a series of Noise Talks by industry leaders.

Noise Singapore 2010

Zee Avi, Rob Campbell and Kelley Cheng will share their personal stories and inspire you into creativity. Happening on March 18! More details here.

Let’s all make some noise together, shall we? =)

Noise Singapore 2010

And congratulations to all the winners of this year’s Noise Singapore!

GGF#32: Crazy, hilarious, fun, awesome vids

[Gamer Girl Friday]

I made quite a number of incriminating videos recently, effectively destroying all my friends’ reputations. I think it’s pretty neat of them not to have already sent me lawyer letters. That’s why I love them, ay?

So I thought I’d make GGF today a video issue. I have a great selection of vids here. Take your time to watch ’em. You’ve got the whole weekend! And I hope you have a happy one! :)

Table of Contents

  1. Battle of the Lips
  2. Destroying good songs with SingStar
  3. Cosplaying Rock Band
  4. Who can sing worse than him?
  5. Sheylara the Alien Queen
  6. Cutest gamer girl ever
  7. Musical genius plays Wind Waker
  8. Result of last week’s contest

Battle of the Lips

I posted this in my recent Star Blog but I know some of you don’t like to go there so here’s the video for your benefit! It’s a video montage of our wild gaming session of Lips during Christmas. (Different from the ones I posted last week.)

By the way, Lips will be launching together with Scene It? in Singapore next weekend! Head over to Xbox Xperience Zones on Jan 10 and 11, 2009 (11 am to 5 pm) to enjoy the launch activities or take part in the Top Idol or Movie Guru competitions!

Just walk in on those days to sign up!

XXZs are located at Challenger, Funan and Best Denki, VivoCity.

Destroying good songs with SingStar

After our Lips party, my friends got into a singing craze and one of them bought SingStar Vol. 2.

Unfortunately, they didn’t know many of the songs in there. And the rules of the game took a bit getting used to.

Watch how they butchered the songs and argued with each other. (I had to download a censor beep for this video. Haha!)

Cosplaying Rock Band

Remember the Nuffnang Christmas party I just attended? We went back to play Rock Band 2 after the party, still in our costumes!

The music in this video is Uno by Muse but that’s not a Rock Band song. I just happen to love that song so wanted to use it for something. Heh.

Who can sing worse than him?

It’s of my friend Morte singing really badly and making everyone go crazy with laughter.

Listen to the conversations cos they’re funny and watch till the end for the punchline!

Cutest gamer girl ever

This isn’t one of my videos, but reader terboo shared this with me recently and I simply must share it with everyone else.

This is the most awesomest little girl in the whole wide world! She amazes me! She’s so cute I want to kidnap her home!

Little bit of background, from the video description in YouTube. Her name is Melodie and she’s one year old. It only took a few days for her parents to go through the cards with her and she remembers them all!

Musical genius plays Wind Waker

My bro (not real) Swordplay sent me this vid.

It’s not exactly a game thing but the guy is playing a soundtrack from a popular game (Legend of Zelda) so it’s kinda relevant.

He is really amazing. I wish I had that kind of talent And he looks pretty cute, too! ;)

Result of last week’s contest

Technically, the contest was two weeks ago cos I didn’t have a contest last week. So, anyway, I’ve got a winner!!

Three people got all correct answers so I had to put them into the random roll.

The toughest question was, of course, how many games there are in this pile:

The answer is 17!!

And the winner is neghxanys!!! Hooray! Please e-mail me to claim your prize!

(Sorry, I know I still owe prizes to people from the last few contests. I will mail them out soon, I promise!)

neghxanys wins a 3-month Xbox LIVE Gold subscription card! WOW!

Incidentally, I also love his answer to this question:

Q: How will you use the Xbox 360 to save the world?

A: Drop it on a cheerleader’s stalker’s head. Save the cheerleader, Save the world. :D

Made me laugh! Way to go, pal!

And now… for my 2009 resolution.

This is the very first resolution I’m making since I was, like, 14 or something. (I don’t believe in resolutions as a rule.)

I hope you will all share this resolution with me.

Happy 2009! =)

Gamer Girl Friday signing out.
