GGF#57: Exciting fun games coming up!

[Gamer Girl Friday]

I thought this week I’d talk about upcoming games because New Era Games Day on Tuesday got me excited over many titles.

New Era, as we all know, is a large distributer of games (and other software) in the region. Very large.

There are babes also. Navigate to them through the table of contents, which I’m sure nobody ever uses because you all love GGF and read every word from top to bottom.

Right??

==================================================

Table of Contents

  1. Scribblenauts
  2. F1 2009
  3. Risen
  4. CSI: Deadly Intent
  5. Tropico 3
  6. DJ Hero
  7. Assassin’s Creed II
  8. Tony Hawk: Ride
  9. New Era babes (and hunk)
  10. Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

==================================================

Scribblenauts

Platform: DS
Developer: 5th Cell
Publisher: Warner Bros
Genre: Puzzle, Action
Release Date: Sep 15, 2009

Scribblenauts

Every once in a while, a game comes along and redefines the way we play videogames. I think Scribblenauts is one such.

The gist of it is that you have obstacles between you and your goal, so you type out any number of items you think could help you, and the game gives the items to you. As the tagline says, you can “Write Anything. Solve Everything”.

If you don’t watch any more videos for the rest of the year, you must watch this demo.

A shotgun-wielding, skateboard-riding God! Anything is possible, apparently.

It wonder what the game will do if you can’t spell.

F1 2009

Platform: PS3, PSP, Wii
Developer: Sumo Digital
Publisher: Codemasters
Genre: Racing
Release Date: Sep 25, 2009

F1 2009

I’m not really into racing games but since Singapore is hosting F1, the game becomes kinda special, I guess. You’ll get to see the Singapore skyline in the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Other than that, I don’t really have anything else to say about it.

Risen

Platform: Xbox 360, PC
Developer: Piranha Bytes
Publisher: Deep Silver
Genre: Action RPG
Release Date: Oct 2, 2009

Risen

I’m interested in this game because there’s mystery, ancient temples and tough choices. You’re shipwrecked on a mysterious medieval island which you realise you can’t escape from because the ruling Inquisition forbids anyone from leaving. Spooky.

Risen has been in the news for quite a bit. For one, some famous names have been roped in to provide voiceovers, the most notable being Andy Serkis (Gollum in Lord of the Rings) and John Rhys Davies (Indiana Jones).

For another, the game has been banned in Australia for “sexual activity and drug use related to incentives or rewards”.

The graphics looks pretty good, too.

CSI: Deadly Intent

Platform: Xbox 360, PC, Wii, DS
Developer: Telltale Games
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Adventure
Release Date: Oct 13, 2009 (Xbox 360, PC) Oct 20 (Wii, DS)

CSI: Deadly Intent

I’ve never played any CSI games, nor have I watched a single episode of CSI. But I’m very interested in them. I just never had the time to watch or play them.

This installment of the game features the cast of CSI Season 9 and allows you to play detective, finding and analysing evidence.

The DS version (titled CSI: Deadly Intent – The Hidden Cases), will include additional cases that makes interesting use of the touch capabilities of the handheld.

Tropico 3

Platform: Xbox 360, PC
Developer: Haemimont Games
Publisher: Kalypso Media
Genre: Simulation
Release Date: Sep 24 (PC) Oct 16 (Xbox 360)

Tropico

I was bored to death watching the teaser video for this game because it just featured an endless montage of cartoon people enjoying idyllic holiday destinations.

But I think I might still give the game a chance because, after all, Tropico 1 and 2 were pretty successful and the gameplay is really more interesting than simply watching families play ball at the beach.

It’s basically a simulation game where you play a dictator of a sunshine island, building the city for your people’s enjoyment. There is also humour in the game, which is always nice!

DJ Hero

Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii
Developer: FreeStyleGames
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Music
Release Date: Oct 27

DJ Hero

I was really, really, really excited about DJ Hero. And then I saw the video and I became really, really, really fearful.

It’s look really hard! I suppose, with practice, anyone could get into it (Easy Mode, at the very least), but it still looks a lot harder than any other music games I’ve seen (and I play a lot of them).

Here’s the video. The producer of DJ Hero (Will Townsend) demos the game on Easy, Medium and Hard modes.

Assassin’s Creed II

Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, PC, iPhone
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Action Adventure
Release Date: Nov 17

Assassin's Creed II

Following the wild success of the first Assassin’s Creed based on Knights Templar legends, this sequel has as its central character another ancestor of the captured bartender, Desmond Miles. The new character is Ezio, who is a descendant of the previous character, Altair.

Of course, this won’t make sense to you unless you’ve played the first game, which I recommend you start with because it’s a great game with a great storyline.

AC2 features an open world with nonlinear gameplay, as well as the added ability to drive small boats and drown city guards. Your character will even meet Leonardo da Vinci and get the chance to ride in his flying machine.

Nice!

Tony Hawk: Ride

Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii
Developer: Robomodo / Buzz Monkey
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Extreme Sports
Release Date: Nov 17

Tony Hawk: Ride

I don’t play sports games but I thought I’d mention this one because it comes with an interesting controller — an actual skateboard!

Okay, it’s not a real skateboard. It’s just a thing that looks like a skateboard with has infrared sensors that detect your movement on it. You can apparently turn, leap and hop on it.

With the way things are developing in the gaming world, we’re all going to find ourselves listing the top priority in house shopping as “having a very large living room”.

New Era babes (and hunk)

Once every quarter, the media is invited to New Era Games Day to check out upcoming game titles. Invariably, there will be four cosplayers, each dressed in a costume representative of one game.

It’s kinda cool!

Can you guess what upcoming game each player represents? That’s kinda part of the fun, isn’t it?

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

This RTS-FPS hybrid has received really bad reviews on multiple gaming websites. In fact, it’s really hard to find a good review, so I’m going to give you one, here.

Seriously.

I made the Goonfather review this game for me because it’s his kind of game and, surprisingly, he loved it. So, here’s what he said:

===

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

My first impression of the game was good because the screenshots reminded me of one of my favorite games, Frontlines: Fuel of War. Then, I read that it was a combination of FPS and RTS and my enthusiasm dropped. I have never liked RTS.

By the way, It took me some time to understand how to work the controls because I skipped the tutorial. Tip: Don’t skip the tutorial mission.

Raven Squad allows you to switch between FPS and RTS modes at any time. Understandably, I played through the missions in FPS mode more than 70% of the time. I didn’t enjoy RTS mode until I realised at later missions that it’s useful in getting your squads strategically positioned, especially when you’re controlling more than one squad.

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

Also, you get a bird’s-eye view of your objective and enemy positions, which makes you start to appreciate the mode.

Achievements (on Xbox 360) are easily attained in this game. Every mission completed gives you one achievement, at least. Helps to keep achievement whores motivated.

I was enjoying Wolfenstein before playing this and was always disappointed at how completing missions didn’t give me any achievements.

Ok, no more time for stupid reviews. Go get a copy and try the game.

===

*groan*

I think he likes the game primarily for the ease of earning achievement points.

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

For me, when I tried the game, I actually played through most of it in RTS mode because I really don’t like FPS. I find it a bore sneaking behind conveniently-placed barrels and aiming the stupid crosshair at enemies while at the same time trying to avoid getting shot at.

RTS is so simple. Just click on the enemy and your people will do the boring stuff of aiming and firing.

In any case, I did find Raven Squad pretty fun in the few missions I played of it.

By the way, if you like racing games, Forza Motorsport 3 is coming! I’ve uploaded some new videos which look really, really sweet. Watch them here!

Next week, I have a problem on my hands.

Games Convention Asia will be happening and I will be there to cover an event, which means I’ll have something to share on GGF next week.

But since I’m going to be busy being there, where am I going to find time to write GGF?

I need some clones!

It’s fun to be a movie guru

I’m waiting impatiently for the Xbox team to send me my copy of Scene It? Box Office Smash! I totally can’t wait to play it!

Scene It? Box Office Smash

I saw the game in action at a recent Xbox press event, where a few journalists were invited to pit their movie knowledge against one another.

It looks fun! I am embarrassingly bad at trivia games because my memory is horrible (a few times I watched a movie more than halfway through before I remembered that I had already watched it), plus I don’t watch movies often so I am effectively ignorant, but I want to play!

I love the use of the Xbox avatars, which you will see perform lots of cute actions.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

And the fact that the game features mostly new movies, rather than movies made before you were born.

There are also 22 puzzle types which means it won’t get boring so quickly.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Oh, and big button buzzers that come with the game!

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Here’s a video of the competition!

NEWSFLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game arrived while I was working on GGF! Wootage! Just in time for me to take a photo of the actual box. Sitting atop the epic mess on my desk.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Aww I feel like crying.

It’s such an emotional journey gamers undertake with their games.

It’s fun to be a gaming journalist

On Tuesday, the Xbox team hosted a Chinese New Year get-together at Brewerkz, Riverside Point, for gaming journalists.

Xbox 360 press event

There were Lips and Scene It? Box Office Smash friendly tournaments to start off the event. It was pretty trippy. I think everyone had fun, not just because of the free-flow beer, but because all the gaming journos more or less know each other since they always meet at events.

Xbox 360 press event

I didn’t drink any beer because alcohol makes me either sleepy or tipsy, neither of which are recommended states of consciousness in the company of journalists.

Xbox 360 press event

We were also shown previews of Ninja Blade and Halo Wars, the two next hot titles coming out on the Xbox 360, which I will talk about nearer to the dates. But they’re very anticipated titles!

We were also shown the latest gaming mouse: the Microsoft SideWinder X8, which boasts BlueTrack technology and has a play-while-you-charge feature and, well, tons of other things. I don’t want to sound like the back of a blister pack so let’s leave it at that.

Microsoft Sidewinder X8

And we were informed that the fashionable Arc mouse, previously in black and red, now also comes in white!

Microsoft Arc Mouse

(I know it doesn’t look very white in the picture. Bad lighting lah.)

I wonder if pink will be next!

Everyone went home with a Lips t-shirt and an Arc mouse!! How cool is that?

The t-shirt says, “I want you to play with my Lips.” Or something like that. I can’t find my t-shirt now to confirm. It’s either sitting in Makkuro or buried somewhere in one of the junk heaps in my room.

Maybe I’ll give that out as prize next week… if I can find it. =P

It’s fun to be a gamer

Many gamers have told me that they don’t like Norton because it slows down their computers, among other things. So, I wonder what they will say to this:

Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition!

Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition

It’s designed to gamer specifications after taking into account endless feedback over the years.

This software, in the words of Symantec, “won’t bother you while you’re in the middle of a game”.

It uses less than 6MB memory, installs in under a minute, adds less than one second to boot time, averages scans in less than 35 seconds and waits till your computer is idle before performing resource intensive actions.

Good dog!

Symantec hosted a Counter-Stike gaming tournament on Wednesday to allow gamers to experience firsthand the NAV GE.

Gamers

To be more accurate, you don’t experience it because you’re not supposed to feel or see it (unless you specifically want to). We had a few great sessions of lag-free gaming at Cathay E2MAX.

Gamers

I took Unker Kell and RN1209 with me to the event and we were put in a team to challenge three other guests.

ME! PLAYING FPS!

Actually, I wasn’t too bad. I even managed to get in quite a number of kills. But our team still lost. Blah. It’s all my fault!! *cries*

I’ve never played Counter-Strike before but I think it’s fun. Don’t mind playing again.

Our tournament was actually just a farce. The real tournament happened with the real experts. Team Titans (four-time WCG Singapore champions) vs some other team whose name I’ve forgotten. I’m sorry!!

Gamers

The Titans (in red) won. Congrats to them!

It’s fun to scrub animals all day

Don’t ask me! I don’t know anything! I deny everything! I plead insanity!

I am now playing…

The Sims 2 Pets

…on the DS, in lieu of bedtime reading.

Yes, it’s my bedtime poking activity. The Goonfather says I’m very noisy.

I haven’t gotten any new DS games in ages so I’m playing old games. =P It’s one of those damn annoying games but you can’t help getting addicted to it. Argh.

The Sims 2 Pets

Basically, you’re a vet. While taking care of your own needs (like all Sims games), you’re healing pets every day.

Pet owners will come to you and say, “My pet is ill,” and you say, “I will fix him up!” and if you do, you earn money. If you don’t, you get stoned.

Sometimes, pet owners will come to you and say, “My pet is ugly.”

I AM NOT JOKING.

The cure for the ugly disease is to buy clothes and accessories and dress the pet up. LOL.

The Sims 2 Pets

Other diseases include flu, worms, dirty and broken limbs.

What a stupid game.

Win a mystery prize

I can’t decide what to give out this week and I’m bored of taking boring product photos every week. So this week’s prize will be a mystery. Haha.

The contest will be super easy.

Be the first person to correctly tell me what game the screenshot at the top of today’s GGF is of!

(To make it not too easy, you have to give the exact full name, as it is written on the game box, or wherever, to qualify.)

Er… no closing date. The contest will remain until someone gets the prize.

In case you’re wondering about today’s title, it’s just random and has no significance to anything.

I’m just sleepy today (not enough sleep last night). When I’m sleepy and tired, I tend to be less conscientious about making sense.

Who cares about titles, anyway?

Happy Chinese New Year!

GGF#33: Playing old games

[Gamer Girl Friday]

The new year is for playing old games!

So far, I have been making good on my new year’s resolution (aka spend more time gaming) by digging out all my old games to play. This week, I’ve played Grand Theft Auto IV, Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm and Penny Arcade Adventures Episode Two.

Games

Peculiar choices, I know. I just wanted to start off with the more frivolous titles, the ones you can have fun with for 30 minutes or an hour, and then walk away without having to sacrifice a piece of your heart.

It didn’t really work. I still ended up spending way more time on each title than I’d scheduled for. I think I have been game-deprived for too long.

I don’t dare touch my RPGs now.

==================================================

  2. Grey’s Anatomy: The Video Game

==================================================

Penny Arcade Freaking Long Title

The full, unabridged title of this game is Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode [ ].

I started off with Episode Two because the Xbox Team just happened to have a spare download code lying around. I never played Episode One (which is recommended because the story is a continuation and wouldn’t make sense if you jumped in midway.)

Penny Arcade Adventures

I’m not going into a full review because it’s an old game (in gamespeak, yesterday is old), but I just want to say that I enjoyed it immensely, even though I jumped in midway. I enjoyed it so much that I played it 1.5 times.

I completed the game within two days (could have been one day if I had started early in the day). And then the next day I played through half of it again just to get the last Xbox LIVE achievement. Yep, I managed to max out achievements for a game for the first time! (Well, it’s only 200 points.)

The Goonfather was very puzzled by my apparent addiction.

“Why are you playing this stupid game?” he asked.

He had tried it last year and didn’t like it.

The next day…

“Why are you still playing this stupid game??”

He thought the game’s boring because it kept making him read comics.

Penny Arcade Adventures

Well, Penny Arcade is a comic, duh.

The humour is quite wicked (although it’s not funny all the time) and the illustrations top-notch. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids, though, because of the liberal use of a certain popular French word.

The game has puzzle, adventure and RPG elements in it, so I found it very entertaining.

Penny Arcade Adventures

I guess you need to have a perverse sense of humour and an appreciation for irreverence to enjoy this game. I’m thinking of getting Episode One now.

Penny Arcade Adventures can be played on PC or Xbox LIVE (as an Arcade download).

Grey’s Anatomy: The Video Game

Yoi requested that I feature more PC content for GGF. So, how about Grey’s Anatomy? lololol.

Games

Apparently, you can play your favourite doctor from the hit TV series, enjoy romances with the other doctors, and perform surgeries. What more could we ask for in a game?

Games

No, seriously. I have faith in Ubisoft.

The game will be coming out for the PC, Wii and DS. I might give the DS version a try. I like frivolous games because I don’t have time to play any other kind. ETA is March this year.

The response from the gaming community isn’t too promising, though. Some random responses from various gaming websites:

lonestarmt
omg…. why

J Wayne
FAIL

Dont Panic
I am at a loss for words, just…. really!?!

Pokrface
Will the game let my player character sleep with attending doctors to charge up my SurgeryMeter?

CapnRob
aw, heck. I was hoping for a _House, M.D._ game, in which you randomly guess one of twenty diseases, four times, and then the patient gets better. Or dies. Randomly.

Cwalat
can someone repeat after me:

FlopelyFLOP

Gary “ElfShotTheFood” McLean
Not even a Katherine Heigl nude patch could save this.

hagfish70
count me out.

Cajun Chicken
They’re concentrating on THIS instead of a Heroes game? What the HECK is wrong with Ubisofts choices of licenced IPs?

And the conflicting responses from fans of the show:

Svlad Cjelli
Well, my girlfriend is certainly excited about this. I came home tonight and told her about this, during the commercial break for Grey’s Anatomy.

tda-danny
My wife is a huge fan of this show, and owns a ds. I told her about about it jokingly and she replied, “Oh christ, that will be bad”.

Even people who dont know anything about video games & love the source material know this wont be good…

Reading comments can be really entertaining.

Hope for Singapore game developers

Last year, a bunch of Singaporeans won the grand prize in a global Microsoft game development competition, picking up US$40,000 in cash prize and lots of recognition. (I wrote about it here.)

Sheylara with Team Gambit

This year, the same team has been selected as a finalist in the 11th Annual Independent Games Festival for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize award. If they pick up this award, it’s another US$20,000 in cash prize and even more recognition and exposure!

Team Gambit’s success has prompted MDA to set aside S$50,000 grant packages for aspiring game developers in Singapore. Application is still open, so don’t forget to check it out!

I wish Team Gambit all the best for the IGF award!

Get featured on Gamer Girl Friday!

I am going to take reader contributions for GGF now because you guys make me laugh in the comments. I’m giving you the chance to make other readers (who don’t read comments) laugh!

Okay, your contribution doesn’t have to be funny. I’m just saying.

If you send me something and I find it suitable for publication, I will feature it here with a credit to you and a link to your website, if you have one.

Some examples of what you can send me:

  • Screenshots with a caption or description.
  • Anecdotes (interesting real-life stories).
  • Reviews of new games (not too long).
  • Drawings you did.
  • Videos you made (send me a link, not a video file).
  • Links to interesting gaming news or stories.
  • Photos of gaming events you attended with descriptions.
  • Money.

These are just examples. You can send me anything you like as long as its not porn or a death threat. It must be game-related, okay, since this is a gaming column, duh.

Please e-mail all contributions to E-mail and mark it “GGF Contribution”. Include your name exactly as you would like to be credited, and your URL (if any).

Just note that only suitable material will be published. And I reserve the right to define the term “suitable”. I also reserve the right to edit your entry for better, easier reading.

General rule of thumb: It should be entertaining or at least informative. If not, there’s no point, is there?

Thank you. I look forward to seeing if anyone will send me any money.

Win a silver USB optical mouse!!

From a previous contest, I realised that there are many people needing mice and, lucky you, I just happen to have another to give away!

Mouse

It’s not a mini this time. It’s kind of halfway between mini and regular sized. (About 2″ x 3.5″)

The packaging says it’s white but it looks silver to me so, I dunno.

To win this, tell me what you like most about GGF by posting in the comments here.

Closing date is January 15, 2009, 11:59 pm.

All entries will be thrown into a pot and boiled into sludge.

The one that survivies will get the mouse.

By the way, I really suck at game driving. I failed an early GTA IV mission 11 times!!

The mission is a long one. First, I had to beat up some thugs, then I had to perform a violent car chase (violent because I kept bumping into lamp posts, mailboxes, people and other cars). Then I had to beat up a thug leader.

Grand Theft Auto IV

The beating up isn’t a problem; it’s just button mashing. But the driving really kills me, especially like when the thug car suddenly turns 90 degrees into an invisible narrow alley at breakneck speed.

It doesn’t help that the game camera keeps shifting perspective when your car spins. It changes perspective without warning, and left will become right and right will become left and it freaking keeps changing!!! Factor in having to deal with reverse directions and it’s one heck of a confusing toggle.

Compound to all that the fact that you’re chasing a car, meaning speed is imperative, and that the game keeps trying to foil you by throwing obstacles in your way, such as hugeass trucks that materialise in front of you out of nowhere, it’s just insane.

Grand Theft Auto IV

I set my car on fire more times than I can count.

It’s frustrating, although I have to admit that watching your car defy all laws of physics and nature is pretty cool.

I finally passed the mission on the 12th try, so don’t say I’m hopeless. If nothing else, I have patience and perserverance. lol.

GGF#1: Gamer Girl Friday says hello

[Gamer Girl Friday]

Congratulations! You have stumbled upon the first instalment of my weekly gaming column, the express purpose of which is to force you to become a gamer (if you aren’t already one).

Yes, I’m going to be like one of those overbearing religious zealots who stare at you meaningfully before attempting to scare you with a hysterical declaration, “You will go to hell if you don’t worship The Almighty Hopping Chimpanzee With Only One Leg.

Not.

The purpose of this column is really to serve you (and also to give me an excuse to play games), thus the name: Gamer Girl Friday, which is a very clever title with multiple meanings.

For some reason, I get a lot of e-mails asking me for gaming advice, which leads me to believe that people really need a Gamer Girl Friday to make them the proverbial coffee.

Okay, there’s really no proverbial coffee; I made that up; but you might want to get some real coffee to sip while you read. This column is massive (compared to my normal blogs lah).

To my non-gaming readers, don’t go away yet. This isn’t just about games, it’s also about my life. Stick around and be entertained!

Rock Band: Destroying good songs since 07

First, there was Minus One. Then came karaoke. Now, there’s Rock Band.

Some of the best rock songs in the world are getting a total overhaul in the nether direction. Watch and weep. (And these are my friends, too. Gawd.)

The main problem is that most of us don’t know most of the songs in the game, so whoever’s singing has to wing it by following the pitch indicator on the screen. The result is often hilarious.

Playing Age of Conan for the boobies

It’s quite amazing the amount of hype Age of Conan is garnering. With VIP release just one day away and mass public release four days away, fans are starting to foam at the mouth.

I’ll bet a huge number of guys are playing the game for the boobs. For the first time ever, a fantasy MMORPG allows you to run around completely topless. And these are sexy, pretty avatars we’re talking about, not the half-baked crap you get in, say, Second Life.

[He was really happy to see her]

Sorry, I had to put a censor bar over her… assets.

I’ll also bet that AoC will break all world records for having the most female characters created in one game, ever. And 70% of them by men.

AoC staff compiled a list of Top 10 Things Heard During The AoC Open Beta. Guess what the list looks like? Click on the link. I’m not posting it here because it makes my monitor blush.

I think it’s going to be very easy to tell in AoC who the male players playing female avatars are.

Ninja girl strikes again

Today is the last day the ninja patrol tourist attraction pose squad will be terrorising your public space!

[We will miss you]

After today, you won’t see us again until the Ninja Gaiden II official launch event on June 3rd at Funan DigitaLife Mall! (Stupid Funan, keep changing name dunno how many zillion times already!!)

You still have two weeks to pre-order the game to get attractive Ninja Gaiden II premiums. I know many of you are waiting for preorder numbers to hit 500 or 1,000 before you order so that you can be sure of getting the 2nd and 3rd tier premiums.

But if everyone thinks this way, then HOW THE HECK IS IT EVER GONNA HIT THE 2ND AND 3RD TIER? People, stop thinking and start ordering!

Oh, yes. And catch the ninja patrol today at these locations:

12pm—1pm: Raffles Green
2pm—3pm: Plaza Singapura
4pm—5pm: Bugis

[Once in a while, the kunoichi are benevolent]

Gamers are future business leaders

So says this paper published by a few hotshot professors. According to their research, multiplayer online games are proving to be a great tool for training future business leaders.

I’ve always believed MMORPGs to be a great training ground for the working world, so it’s nice to know that my views are being validated. It’s a really long article (7 pages) but go read it because it’s very interesting, especially if you play MMORPGs.

After the Goonfather read it, he said, “I think I’m gonna put this on my work resume:

“Mar 2005 – May 2006 Valorian Vanguard guild leader in EverQuest II, leading an approximate 118 members.”

ROFLMAO.

[Let's keeeel orcs!]
The Goonfather, aka Silvermist, shows off his leet leadership skillz to Sheylara in EverQuest II by pulling a whole camp of gnolls.

Ask Sheylara

Ask me any gaming-related questions! Post them in the comments or e-mail me, I don’t really care. I will try to answer all questions (unless I get like 500 questions a day). Best questions will be published in the next GGF.

Anthony Goh asks a PSP question:

My nephew has problems playing games on his PSP. When he tries to play, he never goes on to the next level. In some games, he just goes round and round. I’ve tried to find instructions online but nothing was found. Any good websites to recommend?

Sheylara Says:

This is the first time I’m hearing of such a problem. How old is your nephew? If he’s above five, he should be able to Google his own solutions. If he doesn’t know what Google is, he has no business playing the PSP.

In any case, one of my favourite places to go to for help is GameFAQs. It has guides, walkthroughs and cheats for every game and every platform you can think of. Just search for your game and follow instructions. Problem solved!

Dexter Tiah asks an Xbox 360 question:

Do you buy and play original Xbox 360 games? I am uncertain whether I should modify my Xbox 360 to play pirated games. I do not have any friends who possess an Xbox 360 so I have no one to turn to for my queries. Would you reccommend buying originals to play on Xbox Live or play pirated games on a modified set? Afterall, pirated games are a lot cheaper…

Sheylara Says:

Three reasons why you should get original:

  1. Piracy is illegal. Of course, we know that most people don’t give a rat’s arse about that, but it’s still not nice to support piracy.
  2. Xbox Live is cool because you can download all sorts of great content, play multiplayer, and have all your gaming achievements recorded. Go make friends with other XBL players at Brotherhood of the Box.
  3. Mod sets and pirated software have all sorts of problems and complications, which are annoying. Do you want to go through that?

Nicola Reynolds asks a Wii question:

I’ve gone through your instuctions for the Japanese-to-English translation (for the Wii), which was very helpful. But what I want to do is change the language. Can you advise me how to do this? Can I do this so it’s permanently in English?

Sheylara Says:

I have received like 200 e-mails from people who’ve read my translation guide, asking me this question. I don’t know why anyone even imagines that it’s possible to change the language on the Japanese Wii. If it were possible, I wouldn’t have bothered producing the guide. I would have simply changed the language and be done with it. So, the answer is no. Sorry!

Nurul Amirah asks a Rock Band (Xbox 360) question:

When will Rock Band for Xbox 360 be available?

Sheylara Says:

Nobody knows yet. EA refuses to say. Trust the gaming companies to make us wait!

Gamer Girl Friday will answer more questions next week. Ask yours today via comments or e-mail!

Second-hand DS Lite for sale

The Goonfather has gotten tired of his Nintendo DS Lite so I’m helping him get the word out. He bought it to play Mario party games with us (lol) but he tired of it after a month.

It has been sitting around doing nothing for two months. Duh.

[The Goonfather's DS Lite]

It’s black, in great condition and comes with a clear protective cover. Please e-mail the Goonfather if you’re interested in buying it.

Win Grand Theft Auto IV stuff!

I’m always getting free stuff from events, so I’ve decided to share some of them with you because you made it possible for me to get free stuff in the first place by reading my blog!

I will run a simple contest every week to give stuff away. What I give depends on what I get from future events, so keep your eyes peeled for the good stuff!

This week, I’m giving out Grand Theft Auto IV stickers and coasters. I know it’s not like very impressive or what, but I think GTA fans will like them.

[Grand Theft Auto IV stuff]

I have five stickers and three coasters.

How to win them?

Just post a comment here telling me you want a sticker or a coaster. (You can only choose one!)

The first five sticker requesters and first three coaster requesters will get them. Simple, right?

Oh. We’ve come to the end of this week’s gaming column. I hope you enjoyed reading it!

Please give me your feedback and suggestions. Gamer Girl Friday will be serving you with news, funnies and help, every Friday, till she gets tired of doing it (lol) but that won’t be for a while if most of you respond positively.

Now, get with the program and be a gamer (if you aren’t already one)!

Gamer Girl Friday signing off.
