GGF#67: She’s back!

[Gamer Girl Friday]

After a somewhat mysterious disappearance, Gamer Girl Friday seems to have returned. That is just like her to pull a stunt like that. We think she deserves to be smacked by a rather big fish.

Gamer Girl Friday smacked by a fish

But not too hard. She still needs some of her brains in order to play games.

(Hidden message there: Gamers are smart because they have to use their brains to play games.)

Now that we’ve gotten the introduction out of the way, let’s switch to first-person because writing in third-person is rather idiotic if you’re writing about yourself, although that never seems to stop me.

I stopped publishing Gamer Girl Friday because:

(Choose one of the following:)

  1. It’s very time-consuming.
  2. It was less popular than my other blogs.
  3. It wasn’t giving me much income.
  4. I went back to EverQuest II and stopped playing other games.
  5. All of the above.

The answer is, of course, 6. Nobody cares.

So, why am I bringing GGF back?

I just felt like it. I suddenly found myself missing it.

It’s probably like if you have a child who drives you nuts on a daily basis and you can’t wait for him to move out when he’s 18 so when he finally ups and leaves, you breathe a sigh of relief for five seconds, and then you start missing him already.

Except it took me a considerably longer time to miss GGF.

(And that is an example of a rather bad analogy because I probably don’t have many readers who actually have 18-year-old children so they won’t be able to empathise.)

I don’t have to have a logical reason to do anything, anyway. My philosophy is: Just Do It.

Oh, wait. I think someone has already trademarked that. But it’s a good philosophy, is it not?

The new GGF will have a slightly different style in order to preserve my sanity. No more newsletter-style and weekly contests (because people were cheating by posting multiple entries which is annoying).

It will just be a random “If I have something to talk about, I will” thing.

I would have talked about Rappelz but then I’ve already talked about it so I will end today’s post with a mention of a newish iPhone game that I tried.

It’s called Fastar! (Exclamation mark included.) It’s short for Fight Angry Squares: The Action RPG, although it’s not really an RPG. It’s more like an action game that parodies RPGs.

I downloaded it for USD0.99 without knowing much about it because the screenshots in iTunes sold me the game right away. I love the humour.

It has deliberate bad spelling, deliberate childish language (“You got 103 money!” is just so funny) and cute graphics.

Well, the game was fun for 20 minutes but after that, it was pretty much the same thing even though there are 24 game modes because the aim is roughly the same — to get to the end as fast as possible and rise to the top of the leaderboards.

But I still think it was worth my USD0.99 for that 20 minutes. After all, when we go to the arcade centre, we put down $1-$2 for a game that lasts anything from 20 seconds (if we really suck) to, I dunno, 20 minutes, depending on the game.

I’m sure gamers who like action games and beating high scores will get a lot more game time out of it. It has rave reviews all over the place.

Okay, that’s all for today! But before I zip off, Gamer Girl Friday would like to wish Nanny Wen a very happy fulfilling birthday because today is her birthday!

Nanny Wen's birthday

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to Nanny Wen,
Happy Birthday to youuuuuu!

GGF#41: Games for bored and busy people

[Gamer Girl Friday]

This week is Silly Mindless Games Week. Let’s devote half an hour each day to playing mindless, stress-relieving games, because your brain needs it.

Gamer Girl Friday recommends a few bite-size games for taking a quick break between work or studying.

Table of Contents

  1. Kingdom of Loathing
  2. Time Wasters by Swordplay
  3. Blockbuster arcade games
  4. iPhone: True or False
  5. Guild Wars avatars are so sexy
  6. The five-word story
  7. Results of last week’s contest
  8. Win an Xbox 360 laser pointer LED keyring!!

Kingdom of Loathing

If you’ve ever needed a short distraction, if you’ve ever felt bored, if you’ve ever needed to kill 30 minutes of time, I have one excellent recommendation:

Kingdom of Loathing

This is a comical web-based role-playing game where you do regular RPG stuff, like questing or killing mobs. Except that, in the game, you get only 40 turns a day.

That means you can’t get addicted to it. Once you’ve used up your number of turns, you can’t play anymore. You can still perform certain actions, but you can’t do anything significant until your turns get refreshed the next day.

Kingdom of Loathing

It’s perfect for casual gamers who want something fun to do for a while but don’t want games to control their lives.

But that’s not the best thing about this game. The best thing is that it’s very funny. The developers have an awesome sense of humour and they’re not afraid to exploit the heck out of it.

Kingdom of Loathing
Seen inside the Haiku Dungeon.

The illustrations are childish scrawls, which makes it very funny when coupled with sophisticated (although you might argue corny) humour.

For instance, as with all RPGs, you get to choose a class of character out of six possible classes. Some examples:

Kingdom of Loathing

The class types are all pretty funny.

During your adventures, you will pick up cool items to help you out.

Kingdom of Loathing

Kingdom of Loathing

To earn these items, you’ll have to battle unimaginable horrors.

Kingdom of Loathing

I’m a playing a Sauceror, you see. And my default weapon is a saucepan.

This game isn’t just about fighting monsters, either. You will often bump into random adventures that make you choose a path:

Kingdom of Loathing

You will visit dangerous zones such as:

Kingdom of Loathing

And you get to bring a pet to help you fight evil monsters.

Kingdom of Loathing

Pooka is my pet. (You can name your pet anything you want.)

You will level up and get stronger.

Kingdom of Loathing

Once in a while, Monty Python fans will thrill to references to The Holy Grail, scattered around the game.

Kingdom of Loathing

To any passer-by who sees you playing this game, you will look like a complete idiot.

But it will be worth it.

I actually played this game years ago. I can’t remember how many years. The game’s been around for a while. But I stopped playing for a reason I can’t remember and my account has gotten deleted since.

A few days ago, I suddenly remembered this game again so I made a new account and now I’m having as much fun with it as I had, years ago.

Well, give Kingdom of Loathing a try. It’s free and it’s entertaining and it’s addictive. Just that it won’t allow you to get addicted.

Time Wasters by Swordplay

Swordplay is my pesky li’l bro who spends all his time playing time-wasting games. To make him a little bit more useful, I’m sitting on him and making him recommend one fun and simple web-based game each week.

Today, Swordplay recommends…

Don't Look Back

Don’t Look Back is a simple flash game with a deep storyline, although you will only get it upon completion of the game.

It’s a challenging action-platformer using minimalist graphics and will take only maybe 30 minutes to complete.

Don't Look Back

Some of the bosses can be quite tough but it doesn’t matter because you don’t perma-die in this game. If you get killed, you start over in the same place you got killed. No replaying stages!

If you have to take a break or close your browser suddenly, the game will remember where you last stopped and put you back a few frames before that.

You need some patience to get through some of the challenges but it feels great when you do!

Blockbuster arcade games

If you’ve got an Xbox 360, rejoice!

The Days of Arcade campaign was launched two days ago, bringing you six weeks of blockbuster arcade titles that will make you drool.

This week, the campaign launches with Hasbro Family Game Night, which is a super-value-for-money package because it has many games in one!

Hasbro Family Game Night

Featuring favourite Hasbro games such as Connect 4, Battleship and Sorry! Sliders!, you can play the classic versions of the games or enjoy the revamped versions.

Note that you need to be signed up with Xbox LIVE to download this game. But Xbox LIVE is free to sign up, so that’s alright!

iPhone: True or False

For six months, since I bought my iPhone, there hasn’t been a single game in it. I never really believed in playing games on mobile phones.

When I have time to kill outside, I’m either playing on my DS or reading a book.

But last week, horror of horrors, I forgot to bring out my DS and my book! So I was stuck outside with nothing to do but surf the net on my phone. Which gets old because I’m not really into random net-surfing.

That led me to changing my attitude towards mobile phone gaming. Now I need games on my iPhone for future times of forgetfulness.

One of the notable games I found was True or False Trivia. It’s not exactly a game; more a quiz application.

True or False Trivia

You get hundreds of weird facts for which you have to guess “true” or “false”. I learnt many interesting things through this. For example:

The average office desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet.

Chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying.

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

Every time you sneeze, some of your brain cells die.

Interesting, no?

There’s a free version of this application, which gives you 110 questions. The paid version (USD1.99) gives you a lot more but I don’t know how much because I haven’t bought it yet.

Guild Wars avatars are so sexy

Still playing Guild Wars.

I created a new character this week. A ranger. Because Kerrendor has a masterplan for us to play the ranger team build, which means an entire party made up of only rangers and their pets.

Eight rangers + eight pets = massive damage.

Guild Wars ranger

Guild Wars ranger

I took the longest time to decide which hairstyle to choose (see above). I’m such a bimbo. Sometimes, I spend up to an hour just customising a character, especially for those games with fully-customisable facial features.

I finally went with the second one because I like the leaf in the hair.

Guild Wars ranger

And the twin pigtails.

Guild Wars ranger

Guild Wars ranger

The game world is really beautiful and the quests can be quite creative and entertaining. Best thing is that it’s not as demanding as other games of its genre. I can actually do something worthwhile in just half an hour.

I guess I’ll be playing Guild Wars for a while.

Guild Wars ranger
My pet tiger.

Guild Wars
A lopsided zone.

Guild Wars
Surrounded by a necromancer’s pets.

I think my elementalist is cuter.

Guild Wars

But I don’t have time to play so many characters!

The ranger team build had better be worth it! =P

The five-word story

As part of last week’s contest, contestants had to collectively tell a story, with each contribution limited to five words.

I’ve put together the story in full for your reading pleasure. (Assuming you can even make sense of it.)

(Typos have been corrected, punctuation added and tenses standardised. Other than that, the content is verbatim.)

Zombicidal Maniacs

Authors: Lindy, Ben!, Yoi, ahtiong, Aicee, terboo, nigel, quar, Jerry, Sn, Peaches Mode, RN1209, amd

One day, in the village, there were zombies running amok, causing the villagers to flee. And the local priest started praying to the gods for holy lightning, thunder and fart.

Zombies also began to pray to Sheylara, their goth goddess, for some juicy human flesh and lots of chilli sauce.

Packets of Mac chilli appeared, but some wanted ketchup, instead, so they fought among themselves. Soon, three police cars arrived. Two female zombies stepped out and the zombies stopped fighting.

And the zombie king appeared in his diapers and pyjamas, carrying a banana and a bottle of milk for zombies, from the mammary glands of zombie cow across the street, where Yoi lived.

Then, Yoi whipped out his miniguns and shot RN. RN evaded, then fell into a drain nearby where he twitched in pain, scrambling to find his intestines because he wanted to eat Peaches’ pink shirt for dinner. (Kajang satay with soy sauce.)

Soon, the zombies started puking out RN’s intestines. After that, it was Peaches’ pink shirt’s turn. Amd saw RN eating cow dung with dog piss but remembered his intestine was still in the zombie’s puke.

Then he thought, “I need to kill Peaches and Yoi.”

But, suddenly, Yoi unleashed his zombie doggies from Resident Evil and quickly sent them to find Sheylara, who’s in Kuching, bishing Yoi through her iPhone.

Soon, Peaches Mode also appeared aristocratically from the horizon. Then RN bushed ALL. So there.

He was bushing everyone. Then PeachMeister showed up. Ruined everything by bravely shielding the innocent.

“No innocents here. All guilty,” he said.

Then RN quickly went to the law firm to get Justice CG to help RN bush everyone again.

While both bushed, Yoi began to disintegrate, discombobulate and metamorphose because he had diarrhea. So amd recommended him charcoal pills to ease the diarrhea, but that’s not how diarrhoea’s spelt.

“That’s correct,” Peachy pointed out and so the madness continued… or so we thought.

The story started to not make sense after around Peaches’ pink shirt. So I have no idea how you guys are going to continue the madness.

But knock yourselves out and thanks to all contributors!

It’s fun to be a movie guru

I’m waiting impatiently for the Xbox team to send me my copy of Scene It? Box Office Smash! I totally can’t wait to play it!

Scene It? Box Office Smash

I saw the game in action at a recent Xbox press event, where a few journalists were invited to pit their movie knowledge against one another.

It looks fun! I am embarrassingly bad at trivia games because my memory is horrible (a few times I watched a movie more than halfway through before I remembered that I had already watched it), plus I don’t watch movies often so I am effectively ignorant, but I want to play!

I love the use of the Xbox avatars, which you will see perform lots of cute actions.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

And the fact that the game features mostly new movies, rather than movies made before you were born.

There are also 22 puzzle types which means it won’t get boring so quickly.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Oh, and big button buzzers that come with the game!

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Here’s a video of the competition!

The game arrived while I was working on GGF! Wootage! Just in time for me to take a photo of the actual box. Sitting atop the epic mess on my desk.

Scene It? Box Office Smash

Aww I feel like crying.

It’s such an emotional journey gamers undertake with their games.

It’s fun to be a gaming journalist

On Tuesday, the Xbox team hosted a Chinese New Year get-together at Brewerkz, Riverside Point, for gaming journalists.

Xbox 360 press event

There were Lips and Scene It? Box Office Smash friendly tournaments to start off the event. It was pretty trippy. I think everyone had fun, not just because of the free-flow beer, but because all the gaming journos more or less know each other since they always meet at events.

Xbox 360 press event

I didn’t drink any beer because alcohol makes me either sleepy or tipsy, neither of which are recommended states of consciousness in the company of journalists.

Xbox 360 press event

We were also shown previews of Ninja Blade and Halo Wars, the two next hot titles coming out on the Xbox 360, which I will talk about nearer to the dates. But they’re very anticipated titles!

We were also shown the latest gaming mouse: the Microsoft SideWinder X8, which boasts BlueTrack technology and has a play-while-you-charge feature and, well, tons of other things. I don’t want to sound like the back of a blister pack so let’s leave it at that.

Microsoft Sidewinder X8

And we were informed that the fashionable Arc mouse, previously in black and red, now also comes in white!

Microsoft Arc Mouse

(I know it doesn’t look very white in the picture. Bad lighting lah.)

I wonder if pink will be next!

Everyone went home with a Lips t-shirt and an Arc mouse!! How cool is that?

The t-shirt says, “I want you to play with my Lips.” Or something like that. I can’t find my t-shirt now to confirm. It’s either sitting in Makkuro or buried somewhere in one of the junk heaps in my room.

Maybe I’ll give that out as prize next week… if I can find it. =P

It’s fun to be a gamer

Many gamers have told me that they don’t like Norton because it slows down their computers, among other things. So, I wonder what they will say to this:

Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition!

Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition

It’s designed to gamer specifications after taking into account endless feedback over the years.

This software, in the words of Symantec, “won’t bother you while you’re in the middle of a game”.

It uses less than 6MB memory, installs in under a minute, adds less than one second to boot time, averages scans in less than 35 seconds and waits till your computer is idle before performing resource intensive actions.

Good dog!

Symantec hosted a Counter-Stike gaming tournament on Wednesday to allow gamers to experience firsthand the NAV GE.

To be more accurate, you don’t experience it because you’re not supposed to feel or see it (unless you specifically want to). We had a few great sessions of lag-free gaming at Cathay E2MAX.

I took Unker Kell and RN1209 with me to the event and we were put in a team to challenge three other guests.

Actually, I wasn’t too bad. I even managed to get in quite a number of kills. But our team still lost. Blah. It’s all my fault!! *cries*

I’ve never played Counter-Strike before but I think it’s fun. Don’t mind playing again.

Our tournament was actually just a farce. The real tournament happened with the real experts. Team Titans (four-time WCG Singapore champions) vs some other team whose name I’ve forgotten. I’m sorry!!

The Titans (in red) won. Congrats to them!

It’s fun to scrub animals all day

Don’t ask me! I don’t know anything! I deny everything! I plead insanity!

I am now playing…

The Sims 2 Pets

…on the DS, in lieu of bedtime reading.

Yes, it’s my bedtime poking activity. The Goonfather says I’m very noisy.

I haven’t gotten any new DS games in ages so I’m playing old games. =P It’s one of those damn annoying games but you can’t help getting addicted to it. Argh.

The Sims 2 Pets

Basically, you’re a vet. While taking care of your own needs (like all Sims games), you’re healing pets every day.

Pet owners will come to you and say, “My pet is ill,” and you say, “I will fix him up!” and if you do, you earn money. If you don’t, you get stoned.

Sometimes, pet owners will come to you and say, “My pet is ugly.”

The cure for the ugly disease is to buy clothes and accessories and dress the pet up. LOL.

The Sims 2 Pets

Other diseases include flu, worms, dirty and broken limbs.

What a stupid game.

I can’t decide what to give out this week and I’m bored of taking boring product photos every week. So this week’s prize will be a mystery. Haha.

The contest will be super easy.

Be the first person to correctly tell me what game the screenshot at the top of today’s GGF is of!

(To make it not too easy, you have to give the exact full name, as it is written on the game box, or wherever, to qualify.)

In case you’re wondering about today’s title, it’s just random and has no significance to anything.

I’m just sleepy today (not enough sleep last night). When I’m sleepy and tired, I tend to be less conscientious about making sense.

Who cares about titles, anyway?

GGF#33: Playing old games

[Gamer Girl Friday]

The new year is for playing old games!

So far, I have been making good on my new year’s resolution (aka spend more time gaming) by digging out all my old games to play. This week, I’ve played Grand Theft Auto IV, Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm and Penny Arcade Adventures Episode Two.

Peculiar choices, I know. I just wanted to start off with the more frivolous titles, the ones you can have fun with for 30 minutes or an hour, and then walk away without having to sacrifice a piece of your heart.

It didn’t really work. I still ended up spending way more time on each title than I’d scheduled for. I think I have been game-deprived for too long.

I don’t dare touch my RPGs now.

Table of Contents

  1. Penny Arcade Freaking Long Title
  2. Grey’s Anatomy: The Video Game
  3. Hope for Singapore game developers
  4. Don’t forget this weekend
  5. Get featured on Gamer Girl Friday!
  6. Win a silver USB optical mouse!!

Penny Arcade Freaking Long Title

The full, unabridged title of this game is Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode [ ].

I started off with Episode Two because the Xbox Team just happened to have a spare download code lying around. I never played Episode One (which is recommended because the story is a continuation and wouldn’t make sense if you jumped in midway.)

Penny Arcade Adventures

I’m not going into a full review because it’s an old game (in gamespeak, yesterday is old), but I just want to say that I enjoyed it immensely, even though I jumped in midway. I enjoyed it so much that I played it 1.5 times.

I completed the game within two days (could have been one day if I had started early in the day). And then the next day I played through half of it again just to get the last Xbox LIVE achievement. Yep, I managed to max out achievements for a game for the first time! (Well, it’s only 200 points.)

The Goonfather was very puzzled by my apparent addiction.

“Why are you playing this stupid game?” he asked.

He had tried it last year and didn’t like it.

The next day…

“Why are you still playing this stupid game??”

He thought the game’s boring because it kept making him read comics.

Penny Arcade Adventures

Well, Penny Arcade is a comic, duh.

The humour is quite wicked (although it’s not funny all the time) and the illustrations top-notch. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids, though, because of the liberal use of a certain popular French word.

The game has puzzle, adventure and RPG elements in it, so I found it very entertaining.

Penny Arcade Adventures

I guess you need to have a perverse sense of humour and an appreciation for irreverence to enjoy this game. I’m thinking of getting Episode One now.

Penny Arcade Adventures can be played on PC or Xbox LIVE (as an Arcade download).

Grey’s Anatomy: The Video Game

Yoi requested that I feature more PC content for GGF. So, how about Grey’s Anatomy? lololol.

Apparently, you can play your favourite doctor from the hit TV series, enjoy romances with the other doctors, and perform surgeries. What more could we ask for in a game?

No, seriously. I have faith in Ubisoft.

The game will be coming out for the PC, Wii and DS. I might give the DS version a try. I like frivolous games because I don’t have time to play any other kind. ETA is March this year.

The response from the gaming community isn’t too promising, though. Some random responses from various gaming websites:

omg…. why

J Wayne

Dont Panic
I am at a loss for words, just…. really!?!

Will the game let my player character sleep with attending doctors to charge up my SurgeryMeter?

aw, heck. I was hoping for a _House, M.D._ game, in which you randomly guess one of twenty diseases, four times, and then the patient gets better. Or dies. Randomly.

can someone repeat after me:

Gary “ElfShotTheFood” McLean
Not even a Katherine Heigl nude patch could save this.

count me out.

Cajun Chicken
They’re concentrating on THIS instead of a Heroes game? What the HECK is wrong with Ubisofts choices of licenced IPs?

And the conflicting responses from fans of the show:

Svlad Cjelli
Well, my girlfriend is certainly excited about this. I came home tonight and told her about this, during the commercial break for Grey’s Anatomy.

My wife is a huge fan of this show, and owns a ds. I told her about about it jokingly and she replied, “Oh christ, that will be bad”.

Even people who dont know anything about video games & love the source material know this wont be good…

Reading comments can be really entertaining.

Hope for Singapore game developers

Last year, a bunch of Singaporeans won the grand prize in a global Microsoft game development competition, picking up US$40,000 in cash prize and lots of recognition. (I wrote about it here.)

Sheylara with Team Gambit

This year, the same team has been selected as a finalist in the 11th Annual Independent Games Festival for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize award. If they pick up this award, it’s another US$20,000 in cash prize and even more recognition and exposure!

Team Gambit’s success has prompted MDA to set aside S$50,000 grant packages for aspiring game developers in Singapore. Application is still open, so don’t forget to check it out!

I wish Team Gambit all the best for the IGF award!

Get featured on Gamer Girl Friday!

I am going to take reader contributions for GGF now because you guys make me laugh in the comments. I’m giving you the chance to make other readers (who don’t read comments) laugh!

Okay, your contribution doesn’t have to be funny. I’m just saying.

If you send me something and I find it suitable for publication, I will feature it here with a credit to you and a link to your website, if you have one.

Some examples of what you can send me:

  • Screenshots with a caption or description.
  • Anecdotes (interesting real-life stories).
  • Reviews of new games (not too long).
  • Drawings you did.
  • Videos you made (send me a link, not a video file).
  • Links to interesting gaming news or stories.
  • Photos of gaming events you attended with descriptions.
  • Money.

These are just examples. You can send me anything you like as long as its not porn or a death threat. It must be game-related, okay, since this is a gaming column, duh.

Please e-mail all contributions to E-mail and mark it “GGF Contribution”. Include your name exactly as you would like to be credited, and your URL (if any).

Just note that only suitable material will be published. And I reserve the right to define the term “suitable”. I also reserve the right to edit your entry for better, easier reading.

General rule of thumb: It should be entertaining or at least informative. If not, there’s no point, is there?

Thank you. I look forward to seeing if anyone will send me any money.

Win a silver USB optical mouse!!

From a previous contest, I realised that there are many people needing mice and, lucky you, I just happen to have another to give away!

It’s not a mini this time. It’s kind of halfway between mini and regular sized. (About 2″ x 3.5″)

The packaging says it’s white but it looks silver to me so, I dunno.

To win this, tell me what you like most about GGF by posting in the comments here.

Closing date is January 15, 2009, 11:59 pm.

All entries will be thrown into a pot and boiled into sludge.

The one that survivies will get the mouse.

By the way, I really suck at game driving. I failed an early GTA IV mission 11 times!!

The mission is a long one. First, I had to beat up some thugs, then I had to perform a violent car chase (violent because I kept bumping into lamp posts, mailboxes, people and other cars). Then I had to beat up a thug leader.

Grand Theft Auto IV

The beating up isn’t a problem; it’s just button mashing. But the driving really kills me, especially like when the thug car suddenly turns 90 degrees into an invisible narrow alley at breakneck speed.

It doesn’t help that the game camera keeps shifting perspective when your car spins. It changes perspective without warning, and left will become right and right will become left and it freaking keeps changing!!! Factor in having to deal with reverse directions and it’s one heck of a confusing toggle.

Compound to all that the fact that you’re chasing a car, meaning speed is imperative, and that the game keeps trying to foil you by throwing obstacles in your way, such as hugeass trucks that materialise in front of you out of nowhere, it’s just insane.

Grand Theft Auto IV

I set my car on fire more times than I can count.

It’s frustrating, although I have to admit that watching your car defy all laws of physics and nature is pretty cool.

I finally passed the mission on the 12th try, so don’t say I’m hopeless. If nothing else, I have patience and perserverance. lol.

Behind the scenes of You’re in the Movies

You’re in the Movies is our new gym! It’s exhausting, but so, so fun.

The first time we made a movie, half our faces and bodies were missing in all the scenes because we didn’t have a clean background for the green screen effect to work.

(Here’s the “spoilt” video just in case you’re bored and want to watch it, but I wouldn’t recommend it.)

So, the next time, we came up with a solution: A DIY studio backdrop!

It’s very primitive. Don’t laugh.

We arrived at Wang Wang’s place bright and early to prepare our set.

Preparing the set for YITM

Mahjong paper!! Hahahahaha. I laugh myself. You cannot laugh.

We bought 20 pieces of mahjong paper to stick together into a giant sheet, but we only used 12 pieces cos it was damn tedious lah.

Preparing the set for YITM

And then it was done!! =)

Preparing the set for YITM

All we had left to do was stick it on the ceiling! That took a bit of time because we had to experiement with different kinds of sticking devices: adhesive tape, mounting tape, blu-tack?

After a lot of fussing around, we finally discovered that the only thing that really worked well was masking tape. LOTS AND LOTS OF IT.

Some of the paint in Wang Wang’s ceiling came off when we removed our screen (oh dear) but she, being such a dear, said, “IT’S OKAY!! LET’S PLAY AGAIN NEXT WEEK!”

She is such a sport! I feel sorry for her ceiling but I love her to death!

Morte, who is her hubby and who owns half the ceiling, said, “It’s okay. Next time we move house you help us paint our walls can already.”

Anyway, I already showed you videos of the movies we made, so here’s a video of us making the movies!!

It’s really crazy. Crazy fun!! =)

I have more videos I haven’t uploaded. Will do that maybe next week!

Rock Band 2 surprise

Minou and Kerrendor recently bought Rock Band 2 and invited us over to play.

They had a surprise… for Unker Kell.

A mic stand!

Mic stand

Unker kell is the lead singer in Club Morte, our Rock Band group.

Problem was, the Goonfather, who is our lead guitarist, was so enamoured of the mic stand that he usurped Unker Kell’s job that night.

And he wasn’t content with just being a singer. He also wanted to hang on to his guitar!

So… he made himself singer-guitarist.

Mic stand

Kerrendor, lead bassist, tried his hand at singing-guitaring as well, but found it a bit harder because he didn’t know any of the songs very well.

Mic stand

It IS really hard because you need to look at two things at once on the screen.

Rock Band 2

Last I heard, the guys want to buy the angled kind of mic stand, next, so the drummers can sing-drum. (Minou and I are our group’s drummers.)

That’s pretty crazy. I think I will stick with just drumming, thank you.

Rock Band 2 isn’t very different from Rock Band 1. You just have new songs, but everything else is pretty much the same.

You can buy and attach three extra cymbals to the RB2 drumset, but they are mostly cosmetic and don’t actually give you extra lanes to play in the game. Each cymbal will have one colour that corresponds with the default drum pads, and you can hit either the drum pad or the cymbal for a different sound. That’s ALL!

Rock Band 2 drums

We didn’t buy the cymbals because we can’t find them in Singapore yet. (They’re sold by a third-party vendor.)

Check out this video of our first night playing Rock Band 2. You can see the Goonfather hogging the mic stand all night. Haha.

Another sabotaged camwhore shot:

We gonna play more this weekend. MUST UNLOCK Metallica’s Battery and System of a Down’s Chop Suey!!!!!

Win a Grand Theft Auto IV (PC version)!!

Would you like a copy of this?

Grand Theft Auto IV

Of course you would. This is Grand Theft Auto IV, baby! And since it’s for the PC, most of you would be able to play!

Unless you’re below 18. This game has an M18 rating, so please do not take part in the contest if you’re under 18, because I will ask to see your IC before I hand over your prize! Mwahaha.

This week, we’re gonna do a Q&A! To win this, please answer the following questions:

  1. What’s your favourite thing about Grand Theft Auto?
  2. What’s the naughtiest thing you’ve done in your life? (Please make this G or PG-rated or I’ll delete your entry. =P)
  3. What’s my favourite dessert? A) Mango pudding B) Durian ice cream C) Chocolate fondue
  4. What did you do on your 18th birthday?
  5. How many pearls are there in this bracelet?

Whoever gets all the answers correct will win the game! (Well, of course some of the questions have no right or wrong answers, but you know what I mean.)

One entry per person only, OBVIOUSLY.

In the event of a tie, Mr Randomiser will shoot all winners with a supersoaker. Last person standing wins.

I mean all that metaphorically, of course.

Okay, knock yourselves out! Closing date is Thurs, Dec 18, 2008, 11:59 pm.

This week’s prize is kindly sponsored by Epicsoft. Thank you!
