The Long Wait

It’s taken me 18 days to finish listening to Harry Potter book 1. I tend to have to rewind a lot because my mind often drifts away. It’s like I have audial ADHD.

I’d been dying to watch the movie but wanted to finish the book first and now I have! As I sat deciding whether to get the movie on iTunes or Prime, I noticed that iTunes has it on 4K, which reminded me that Piers just bought a 4K TV but it won’t arrive until Tuesday! That’s 4 more whole days I’d have to wait if I want to watch it on 4K! Sigh.

Mad Weather

I love the weather in England! One day I’m wearing 3 layers to bed and the next day Piers is sunburnt!

Dark Quest/Gratitude

I’m grateful for chocolate! I’m still bummed about having to give up milk chocolate but I’m learning to like dark chocolate.

I have a new mission! I’m going to try all the different brands to find the best! It has to be at least 70% cocoa, which I think is tastier, anyway. How fun it will be!

Bujo

I woke up at 5:30 am to work on my October pages. I mean, it wasn’t intentional. I’d just woken up prematurely and couldn’t get back to sleep. So I started drawing sketches and finally decided on my October theme. It’s very exciting to have a new theme and a new look! I can’t wait for October to start but at the same time, it’s coming way too soon. I won’t have enough time to get all my pages ready for it! Typical.

Wish

I wish I had someone to cook healthy meals for me. I would happily go on any reasonable diet. No sugar, no dairy, no junk food, whatever. The toughest thing about diets is the time it takes to make meals, not the resisting of bad food!

Gratitude

I’m grateful for my new pastel pink waterproof jacket! It is so pretty! Now I shan’t mind going for walks in the rain!

Hmm… but what about bottoms. How do we keep those dry in the rain?

Dark Chocolate

Something strange has happened. I think I have started to like eating dark chocolate! I’ve eaten Lindt 70% dark chocolate for 4 days now and, initially, I only enjoyed chewing on it because the texture is just like milk chocolate. Today I nibbled on some regular dark chocolate, found it too sweet, and went back to 70% and I realised I like the taste!

I recommend buying Imitrex on https://janesaddiction.org/buy-imitrex/. They offer the best price and a product of quality. Once I was lied to and I took a counterfeit medication. Luckily, it was only useless and didn’t provoke side effects. But now I’m very careful about where I buy what I need. Especially as this drug is my permanent choice, I buy it often.

Flying Swans

Three large swans flew over my head while I was walking in the garden! They were so near they caused a draft which alerted me to their presence so I looked up just in time to see them glide off into the distance! I didn’t even know before today that swans flew all over the country!

Acquiring a taste

I have decided to try to like dark chocolate to see if I can stop craving milk chocolate. I tried a square of Lindt 70%. I think I like the bitterness. It’s the sour flavour at the end that I find unpleasant and the 70% has more of it. Why? But I love the texture of chocolate so I will try more different % and brands!

Gratitude

Today I’m grateful for a tasty dinner.

Rant

Had a big upset while cooking dinner. I super hate cooking. I’ve been cooking for 6 years now and it still isn’t easier or better. Even on normal days, I am stressed throughout the process.

Tonight, I had chunks of raw turkey mince flying into different surfaces and boiling oil spitting in my face. It was one of those times I just wanted to give up and have a good cry.

On the bright side, the hoisin turkey mince lettuce wrap and fried gyoza were super yummy.

Hemp Milk

Tried hemp milk today. It is properly disgusting. It tastes like chalk, or dust, or ash. Not that I’ve tasted any of those, but hemp milk is what I imagine those things mixed in water would taste like. I don’t know what the reviewers who said this product is delicious are thinking. I had it with oats and had to gag it down.

Brad Pitt

Watched Burn After Reading. Partway through, I thought it gave me Fargo vibes. Sure enough it’s a Coen brothers movie! Brad Pitt is really good at playing ditzy and crazy (12 Monkeys, lol).

Gratitude

Grateful for uninterrupted sleep today. Still was not long enough but I must be thankful for small blessings.

Dark Chocolate

Felt hypoglycaemic in the middle of my walk. Decided to fix it with some dark chocolate. I have disliked dark chocolate all my life but Ocado had sent these over for reviewing and Adam my homeopath says if I must have sweets, choose dark chocolate because it is good for you. So I ate it and enjoyed it somewhat because it is better than no chocolate. But I miss milk chocolate so much! And then I had to pay the price: horrid aftertaste that lingers in my tongue for hours and hours after eating dark chocolate.

Butter

I’m not sure whether I’m intolerant to the lactose or casein in milk, but Adam said butter is probably ok for me, so I bought some lactose-free butter just to be as safe as possible. Well, great news! It tastes just as good as Lurpak and I’m so pleased! Life is a little bit less horrid now.

Speaking of which, I stopped getting back acne about a month after quitting dairy and going low sugar. So that’s kind of great but which one was causing the acne? Or was it both? I should have tried quitting one at a time!

In the beginning, the symptoms were worse. But it got better over time. Now, after about half a year, I am satisfied with the result. I just have issues with dry lips and dry skin. I am likewise apprehensive that the side effects will return after the treatment. I need to take Accutane until my summer holidays. I would recommend it.

Walking indoors

It rained all day today, which is great news for the garden, but bad news for my routine. I don’t want to go out there to walk when it’s wet and cold! Piers suggested I just walk around the living room, which sounds unappealing but was the best option.

I put Harry Potter on the Bluetooth speaker and started walking. A minute later, I had a better idea. I put Netflix on and started walking on the spot in front of the TV. Home gym sorted!

Gratitude

I’m grateful for humour and funny people and for the ability to laugh with a passion.

Bite-size Sheylara – Food!

Confused Vege

Here’s a vegetable with an identity crisis. It can’t decide whether to be a vegetable or a noodle.

Spaghetii squash

Called a spaghetii squash, it’s a squash with spaghetti-like innards. When you scrape the flesh with a fork, it falls into noodle-like strands. How awesome is that for noodle-craving people on a low-carb diet?

I had a chance to try it at a food tasting session at The Cathay Restaurant, recently.

Spaghetii squash
Double-Boiled Shark’s Bone Cartilage with Bamboo Pith in Spaghetti Squash.

The milky soup is created by double boiling shark cartilage so it’s really healthy and nutritious. The “spaghetti” is also fun to scrape and eat! Quite worth a try, in my opinion.

However, I found the soup slightly bland (cos I’m really big on salt) but Nanny Wen, who has healthier tastes than me, really loved it. The squash is nice, though. It tastes a bit like winter melon. You can practically eat this dish as a full meal. Nanny Wen and I were served one each but we couldn’t finish it because we had five other dishes to try that night!

If you get the chance to visit, also try the Cathay Twin Combination (baked sea perch with egg white + deep-fried scallop with salted egg yolk). I loved that!

Choco Cravings

Once in a while, I get huge cravings for chocolate, during which time I will pay Candy Empire a visit.

I love-hate Candy Empire. Things there are expensive but there are cool yummies there which you can’t find anywhere else in Singapore. Each time I go, I’ll spend about $50 and then feel really bad about it because it’s such unhealthy extravagance.

Chocolates

I just bought this lot for $45.20. But, like, where else can you find White TimTams and White Maltesers?

I love milk and white chocolate. I hate dark chocolate. I will never be able to understand the appeal of dark chocolate (and coffee, for the matter).

They both make my tongue feel sour and gross. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling, so I really can’t understand why people don’t feel it!

Tofu Delight

There’s this Chinese fusion restaurant in Iluma called HXL Fusion. I was at first in love with it so I patronised it four times within, like, a month.

I was going to do a full review of the place but the food standard dropped drastically in the last two times I went. The stuff I wanted to recommend didn’t taste so good anymore.

Still, the pork floss century egg tofu deserves a mention.

Pork floss tofu

The first two times I ate it, it was awesome. Savoury with a sweet, lingering taste.

The final time I ate it, the recipe had changed. It suddenly had chilli oil and possibly some fermented beancurd paste and it was quite spicy. It had gone from Taiwanese to Szechuanese. (The photo above was taken when it was still the first version.)

I prefer the first version but the new one isn’t too bad.

Still, I wonder if the recipe will be changed again the next time I go back.

I haven’t been back in two months.

Insincere Soup

We were having dinner at Waraku de Pasta the other night. I remember I loved the corn soup, so I ordered a bowl. It was still awesome, so I urged my friends try it.

Corn soup

They loved it, too, so they ordered two more bowls.

When their soup arrived, it very obviously inferior — more watery and bland.

We can probably allow for some inconsistency in food standards across separate occasions, but in the same night? Within 10 minutes?

Very insincere!

Top Five

Could you name your top five favourite eating places if pressed to? Food lovers will probably find it really hard because we have zillions of favourite eating places.

I had to name five for Star Blog this week.

Check out what places made my list, and also get some ideas for yummies this weekend in the other Star Bloggers’ entries!

Chocolate fondue

By the way, I don’t really like chocolate fondue cos chocolate fountains always use dark chocolate. Eew.
