Famous seafood noodles in KL — location revealed

Wed, 19 March 2008 10:05 pm

When I blogged about curry seafood noodles last year, many people asked me for the address or directions to get there.

[Famous Curry Seafood Noodles]

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the info then, but now I’ve got it!

You know, I’ve asked around my Malaysian friends. And it turns out it’s one of those places, no one knows what the restaurant is called, no one knows the street name, no one knows how to give directions there. But everyone knows about it and how to get there on their own!

Maybe it’s just a conspiracy to keep people from thronging to the place and pushing prices up. Hahaha.

But I shall be kind (or inconsiderate, depending on how you look at it) and reveal it today!

The outlet is called Restoran Yu Ai. It may be called a restaurant but it looks more like a dingy roadside stall which offers only one food item.

Actually, once you know the name of the restaurant, you can google it. It’s out there, lol, and not really secret.

It’s located on Jalan Segambut Utara.

[Jalan Segambut Tengah]

I took a picture of the street sign but I took the wrong one (because it was drizzling and I didn’t want to linger around outdoors for too long)! Haha. But this will work, because the restaurant is only about 30 metres from this corner. (And I’ll post a map and the full address at the end of this entry.)

We usually park behind the restaurant, where there are outdoor seats in the carpark.

I prefer to sit inside (upstairs) because it’s cleaner and more spacious. I mean the tables aren’t crammed together like you see here.

If you sit outside, you’re sitting beside this:

But then, people don’t seem to mind. This place is packed every time I go there.

The seafood noodles come in different flavoured soups — clear, curry and tom yam.

The smell of tom yam is the most prominent when you walk into the restaurant. It smells really really good and I always have half a mind to order it. But I’ve been there three times and three times I’ve ordered curry because it’s the best!

The Goonfather also likes the clear version. I hate it because the taste of seafood is so strong it’s almost raw.

[Clear Seafood Noodles]

There you have it. Please don’t go too often because I don’t want a bowl of noodles to cost $20 the next time I go there! Haha. Each bowl costs RM14 right now, which is S$6 or US$4.40. My KL friend says the price keeps going up.

Oh, and if you’ve tried the tom yam before, please tell me whether it’s good!

Camwhoring in pajamas

Tue, 18 March 2008 9:30 pm

There are now a zillion posts on the net about the Nuffnang Pajama Party, so there’s not much point in writing yet another one. But I did promise more posts about it, so I’m in kind of a dilemma now. Heh.

So my solution, of course, is to post camwhore pictures. I think that’s the number one blogger strategy, although no one will admit it.

Blogger Trick #1: “When in doubt, camwhore.”

Ok, pictures! LOADS OF PICTURES!!

I’m sure you’re all terribly tired of hearing about the pajama party already. So I will talk about something else tomorrow. Haha. What do you want to read first? A food post or a review of the new LG KS20?

Sheylara sings happy birthday to Nuffnang

Mon, 17 March 2008 9:27 pm

Video time! You can let it load up while you read the story about it!

About three months ago, I was approached by Nuffnang to make a short birthday video. It would be shown at the Nuffnang Pajama Party together with videos made by other selected Nuffnangers.

As you can see, we were given a lot of time to make the video. But I kept procrastinating because I couldn’t think of what to say in it.

It’s like, what, “Happy Birthday Nuffnang, you’ve been a great… blog ad server in the past year! May you stay young and sexy and attract many more rich advertisers!!”?

It’s very hard wishing a non-living entity a happy birthday and not feel a little bit silly. So I took forever to think about it and finally gave up on it, busy with other things as I was.

Then, one week before the party, I decided to just fall back on what I do best — write a stupid song and sing it. (I’m not claiming that I do that very well. It’s just something I can do better than, say, dance or climb a mountain or fight a crocodile).

Despite the video submission deadline already being over and gone long ago, I just went ahead and wrote the song and made the video. I completed it two days before the party! *lol*

Writing the song was the easy part. I spent 20 minutes on it because I didn’t have time to come up with an award-winning gig. The tough part was recording and editing it. I couldn’t get the sound up to standard because my headset mic was a little faulty and I had to depend on my digital camera to pick up the sound and Adobe Premiere to enhance it.

The final edit isn’t ideal — I sound muffled — but I was tired and there was no more time, so I MSN’ed Ming.

“Miiiiiiiing!!” I said, “I’m sorry please don’t kill me!”

“Hahahahaha why?” he responded.

“I just finished making the video!”

To his credit, he didn’t even flinch.

(I know one can’t really flinch on MSN, but you know you can sometimes tell how a person is reacting by what he says and how long he takes to start responding and how long he takes to type his response. It’s not 100% accurate, but you can always estimate a guess.)

He said, “Oh, you did it ah? Can, can, I get my guy.”

Then we went through the boring details of video format and e-sending and subtitling. And it was done! My video was submitted and accepted.

I have to thank Ming for being patient with me and entertaining my super-last-minute entry. I’m sure the Nuffies were already very busy scrambling to tie up all the last-minute details of the trip amd the party. They probably didn’t need more last-minute work slotting my video into the programme!

So, thank you Ming and the Nuffies!

And, once again, happy birthday, Nuffnang! Er… may you stay young and sexy and attract many many rich advertisers!

Heheh.

A sneak peek at the Nuffnang Pajama Party

Sun, 16 March 2008 10:05 am

Here’s a quick peek at the happenings of the Nuffnang Pajama Party on March 15, held at Borneo Baruk Club in KL.

I don’t think there’s any blogger as hardworking as me today, waking up at 7 am on a holiday to blog!

Ok, here are some of the highlights of the party, in no particular order.

  1. Pajamas galore! Sexy, cute, innovative, elegant, stylish, weird, crazy, boring, ugly, questionable! All kinds of pajamas to be seen! Here’s mine:

  2. Party games and prizes! The Nuffnang staff came up with really crazy and fun games that had people scrambling around the club all night, creating all sorts of chaos and madness.

  3. Special appearances by celebrity bloggers Xiaxue and Kenny Sia!
  4. Dawn Yang kisses a lucky blogger! (Don’t you want to find out who? Heheh.)

  5. A sexy quad of a nurse, a French maid, a Japanese schoolgirl and a policewoman hosting us all night!

  6. A showcase of birthday videos made by prominent Nuffnang bloggers!
  7. The Chipster man (who won a Wii for quirkiest post)!

  8. Nuffnang founders Ming and Timothy got sabo’ed!

  9. Malaysian Dreamgirls!

  10. Free flow of Chipsters and Twisties (and drinks)! There was this nice lady that went around the club all nght offering us packets of Chipsters and Twisties nonstop! Cool, huh?

There’s more, but 10’s the magic number so I’m gonna stop here.

That took longer than I expected. I’m not used to working on a laptop and editing photos on lousy Microsoft Office Picture Manager. (But I suppose I have to be thankful that I even have that to use.)

Actually, I wasn’t even planning to blog today (since my time in KL is short and I want to get in as much shopping and eating as I can).

But I went to bed at 1:30 am and woke up at 5:30 am and then couldn’t sleep anymore! Even though the hotel bed and pillows are so so so soft and fluffy and comfy that you would want to die in your sleep in them if you were forced to die in your sleep!

I tried to go back to sleep but it just wasn’t working, so, after lying awake for 1.5 hours, I finally got up at 7 am. I decided to write this preliminary party report since I had nothing better to do while waiting for the Goonfather to wake up.

I had to disturb his sleep earlier because he didn’t log off the laptop properly last night, so when I powered it up, the laptop wouldn’t recognise my fingerprint and insisted that the computer was going to stay locked until I swiped the correct finger.

So I unplugged all the cables and took the laptop to the bed and tried to steal the sleeping Goonfather’s index finger to swipe. Hahahahaha. It was damn hilarious lah!

But it kept failing because I think maybe the angle was wrong. Then the Goonfather woke up and the WTF look on his face was just priceless.

He was, like, why the f*** is my laptop here???

I said, “The laptop is locked and I need your fingerprint lah!”

Then he mumbled something incoherent and proceeded to groggily click a few buttons. Then, suddenly, the screen went back to the main menu where I could now swipe my finger legitimately to log in.

So I didn’t need his stupid finger after all. Wah lau waste my time and effort to plug and unplug cables and lug the laptop to and fro! Not that the laptop is very heavy and the hotel room is very big, but I just want to complain, can?

I feel like a noob. Ok, fine, I’m a noob! This is only the second time I’ve used a laptop at length, the first time being yesterday when I wrote yesterday’s blog. I miss my PC at home! But I must admit that having a laptop is pretty handy.

Ok, more Nuffnang party reports when I get home!

But you’ll probably be flooded with party posts by the 200-300 other bloggers that attended the party, by then.

Happy Sunday!

The Goonfather talks nonsense

Sat, 15 March 2008 12:19 pm

I decided very last minute to attend the Nuffnang Pajama Party (happening tonight in KL), so after dinner last night, I got the Goonfather to drive me out to buy some pajamas.

At first, I thought to seek his opinion.

“This one nice?”

“Too transparent.”

“What about this one?”

“Too transparent.”

“This one???

“Too transparent.”

I chased him out of the store.

And then I bought the most transparent one on my shortlist. Hawhawhawhaw!!

Actually, none of them are transparent lor. Men are so exaggerating.

After getting my PJs, we bought two cups of fresh fruit juice before getting into the car, ready to go home.

In the car, he handed me his cup.

“Wei!” I complained. “Why I become cup holder?!”

(It’s not that I generally mind holding his drinks for him while he’s driving, but we do have a drink holder in the car. In fact, we have four drink holders in the car, two for the front seats and two for the back seats. But he’s always throwing junk (receipts, pens, coins, cards, used batteries, unwanted phones, cables, even metal brackets) in the holders instead of leaving them empty to hold drinks, so why must I suffer for that?)

The Goonfather said, “I’ll finish the drink and find a dark lane where I can throw it out the window.”

“What dark lane? Singapore roads where got dark lane one?” I continued complaining.

“Got. It’s where the dark cross the lane,” he whispered conspiratorially.

“The dark cross the lane?? What the hell are you talking about?

“Later you will see.”

“See what?”

“The little duckies crossing the lane. That’s the duck lane.”

WTF.

TOTALLY LAME CAN??!

(Note to foreign readers: In Singapore, we pronounce “dark” and “duck” the same way. Totally unacceptable, I know, but what can anyone do about it?)

Anyway, when we got home, I went to my computer (which is always the first thing I do when I get home).

On my screen, I saw an MSN message tab flashing on my task bar. It was from the Goonfather, which was very strange because he was with me all the while.

I opened the chat window and read:

    The Goonfather says (9:16 PM):
Why you try pajamas so long?

    The Goonfather says (9:18 PM):
Me stand outside waiting until falling asleep!

Dotdotdot.

I completely forgot that he was fooling around with my LS KS20 while I was trying on PJs.

It’s really hard to stay annoyed with someone like that!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Anyway, I’m in KL now. I’m so freaking sleepy because we left home at 5:45 am and I hardly slept. But there’s no time to sleep! There are luxurious baths to take, yummy food to eat and shopping to do before the party tonight!

We’re staying at the Shangri-La this time. It’s not as luxurious as Maya Hotel but it’s not too shabby. We got complimentary mangoes!! I’ve never had complimentary hotel mangoes before. They’re always giving out gimpy fruits in hotels.

And we got a shock just now when men suddenly walked past the outside of our wall window. There’s no balcony and we’re on the 17th floor. I can see one of the twin towers from our window. I don’t know where the other tower is hiding.

It turns out that some kind of renovation or cleaning work is in progress and the men were riding outside the windows from floor to floor to do… I dunno what, actually. They walked to and fro the length of our window a few times and then disappeared downstairs. We couldn’t see very clearly because we had the translucent curtains drawn.

Oh, I can’t take photos now because I left the camera in the car. I suppose I could use the laptop camera but I don’t want to. Plus this laptop doesn’t have Photoshop! Photos of free mangoes and skimpy transparent PJs will have to wait. Heheh.

Ok, enough of blogging! I need to go enjoy my weekend!

Stay tuned for my Nuffnang Pajama Party report!
