Sleeping on the job

Finally.

Someone in MediaCorp decided to give me a chance and cast me as a not-auntie, for once.

Although it’s a very small role (eight scenes, five of which I am comatose in), I very much enjoyed acting it.

The scenes (in which I’m not comatose) challenged my acting chops.

The sub-plot involving me is sweet and romantic.

I get to sleep on the job (literally).

I get to rollerblade (scene still unfilmed).

And I get to look like this:

(Now I bet someone is going to tell me that I look auntie here, too.)

Two things I love as an actress. Cool costumes and special effects makeup. I consider myself in heaven when acting in roles that require those because I get this non-stop adrenaline rush throughout the entire shoot (even when I’m made to sleep on the job).

This very small (but still meaty) role was a breath of fresh air for my sad career. I hope there’s more fresh air coming my way (after I cut my hair).

In my last blog, I mentioned that I was going to stop going to auditions. But I keep getting invited to them and it’s a bad career move to reject auditioners, so I had to go.

Not that it’s a bad thing. There were some pretty nice roles up for grab. Results still unknown.

But, whatever happens, I’m taking it easy.

If I get jobs, good.

If I don’t, I play WoW.

That, I think, is a mighty great plan.

Yes, it is. And what’s this “skeletal horror”!?

Qiaoyun wrote a comment on Thu, 31 August 2006

The Goon saw me killing skeletal horrors in WoW.

I think he feels traumatised that I’d rather kill skeletons than spend time with him. lol.

Why don’t you just act your age? It might even give you a career boost. A listers are not act cute wannabes. Those are usually reserved for D listers in order get media attention. Stop skipping down that path.

I’m not trying to act cute, really. Firstly, I can’t help the way I look. Secondly, I have trouble “acting” my age because it’s just not me.
When I acted as a mother, I really tried very hard to be mature and motherly. I practised and did research. But during filming, every so often, some girlishness will slip in and the director will complain.

That just means my acting skill is not good enough yet. My natural personality is younger than my biological age. I think I stopped growing up some time back. :P

Honestly, I did consider what you said. I even asked Vincent (my actor friend) whether I should start marketing myself as auntie. The only worry is that my acting skill is not good enough for me to play my age convincing. :D

So what you’re saying, is that “acting” your age requires major acting skeelz, while “acting” cute requires none at all…

Heh.

[…] Yep, this is the leadup scene for the show in which I am comatose for five episodes. […]

[…] It’s a very small role so you won’t get to see very much of me, but it’s a not-too-bad role and was pretty fun to shoot. I blogged about it here and here, in case you’re interested. […]
